Lovely!

Superb. What is the consensus on the Bavarian cornflower blue? Got some to paint but holding off until I'm confident of the most likely shade of blue!

Just how good is the "webbing" on the figures above? White belts on a pale blue background…not easy! Saving those pics to inspire me. Still value your book!

There was much discussion indeed, not that long ago about Bavarian blue. Was it not von W himself who pointed out much darker than we think? (I think Vallejo 963 Medium Blue is right)

Very like those Prussian dragoons who also look superb in a paler blue…only snag is…….

I just looked through my collection of photos from my visit to the Bavarian Army Museum. I have the same photo as above. Yes, the blue was a lot darker than many think.

@archiduque
Most exquisite painting!

@deadhead
Do you have any pics from this museum of the flags by year?

excellent painting, the bright blue is painting style, very vivid colours so they pop out, I would opt for a more subdued Bavarian coat colour – here are some of my Bavarians to compare – not in the samle league as Rafas miniatures, just for comparison

I have found the original detailed discussion and very interesting it is to read once more…….

I am sorry to say the picture I showed is from the internet and not following a personal visit to the museum. The link shows some more coats but no flag images

The Bavarian army museum looks well worth a visit;

This from 1809 again to give an idea of colour

I like the lighter blue as it just says very easily "Bavarians". I would imagine it was different to French/Prussian blue as the period commentators noted it.

And scale effect maybe suggests we should go lighter to compensate for the small size of our figures.

We can see this at work with vW's excellent paintwork – look how grey he takes his black, for effect. Now apply that to blue and we get Bavarian light blue.

Either way – all lovely.

@Deadhead
How are you able to navigate the museum sight and present these pics?
I am not able to see anything this well from the their website!

It takes an Irishman…..

Mind you, you could just follow the link above. Select "Collections" from across the top. Select "Uniforms and Clothing". Bob est votre oncle….

Brilliant work Rafa, as always! The helmets keep from being tempted to paint the eyes 😉

VW, yours are absolutely sublime. Both are amazing examples of how different styles can produce stunning results.

Found another discussion that did not come up on my earlier search. Even more detailed…surely the last word on Bavarian Blue!

Alas few of the linked images have survived the test of time

von Winterfeldt,

Love your paint work. Could you share the manufacturer of the miniatures and scale? Love the poses…

Thanks.

von Winterfeldt21 Jan 2017 10:02 a.m. PST

Perrys – 28 mm – yes indeed excellent poses of a firing line

von W, I do still remember how much work you put into that discussion on Bavarian Blue. Such a shame to lose those images.

The cyberattack on Image Shack did hit everyone who used it. I was lucky, most of my stuff reappeared eventually. I suspect it did them massive commercial damage, as many folk were very cross

von Winterfeldt22 Jan 2017 7:57 a.m. PST

just to throw in 2 photos

one Bavarian infantry at Eggmühl 1809, please note that the hornblowers had despite regulations – already a helmet, they were still drawn from the musicians

the other showing the Bavarian light blue of 1870

Funny thing, the lower picture…

It is still a much, much, lighter blue that we would see on a Napoleonic Infantry coat, indeed, on a US coat from ACW. We compromise for scale effect.

We have to accept better technology over 50 years later…or better fabrics and dyes for occifers at the time….but…in the end….the top pics are not surely too far off the mark!

Let's be honest. Rafa's are works of art. Stunning. Makes me sick.

Von W's are nearer to reality. Duller. Right. I could not do that. My Engineers of the Guard in Charleroi will be really dull compared with the Gringos40 website…fine.

Two different ways of interpreting very similar figures. That is what is so brilliant about this hobby…and I have never ever thrown a dice yet!

Marc the plastics fan22 Jan 2017 2:38 p.m. PST

That's a great picture from vW.

Now, as most of "us" paint our French that colour, our Bavarians have to be lighter still. Call it the scale effect if you will, but it is more the impact of three colour shading and painting for visual impact on pictures

Bottom line – if I could paint anything like vW I'd be happy

Marc at work23 Jan 2017 6:28 a.m. PST

And on the HaT twitter page

Some very nice plastic Bavarians, in a more modern interpretation of the blue
