I am painting up some Tumbling Dice 1/2400 galley fleets, a Roman fleet and a Carthaginian fleet (which will also probably do service as a Successor fleet). In order to keep things simple, I am painting the Roman ships in red variations and plan to paint the opposing fleet in a uniform color. My question is, did any of the other ancient nations have a representative color (Ptolemy, Seleucid, etc.)? I was thinking Carthaginian possibly purple for the Murex? Thanks!

I have always had in my mind the Seleucid as Purple and Ptolemic as yellow.

Doubt there would be uniformity. But for game colors red and purple make sense. Purple was a royal color so many of the Hellenistic states would use it. I often favor white, green and yellow for Ptolemaic colors since that is represented as Egyptian styles… but really purple would work for them as well. Seleucids often favored a pinkish red- but no real info on ships.

Spartans would be red. Thracians supposed to like black tunics and checked/tarten cloaks, though most pottery items I've seen would suggect white tunics! Spanish white tunics with purple edging.

What about a Thebes in the Greek Wars?

Hej Prince Albert, why not try on the Galleys board? A topic to raise some activity there maybe ?
Purple for commanders maybe. Red for Rome Cyan for Seleucids, Teal for Ptolematics, Maroon for Macedonians etc.. just to use as mnemonic for id'ing small ships in games ?
As far as ancient sources go..good luck it will be a long hunt.

Nobody knows. Even when we say it is more likely that there were no colors associated with particular states, or an uniformity, that is just speculation. So do whatever looks right to you, that is within the realm of plausibility.

Thanks gents, the input is much appreciated. I'm aware that its not historically accurate but and trying to go for something that is visually appealing and allows me to quickly identify ships from respective fleets (the 1/2400 galleys are tiny)! Red for Romans and Blue for Seleucids it is!
