I normally Matt varnish. However it does seem to dull it down to much. Gloss is sometimes too shiny having tried that over armour only.

I've heard of people using a satin finish varnish as a compromise.

try a silver highlight over a satin varnish

I go back over metal armor with a fresh highlight of the brightest color after having hit it with dullcoat. That puts a little bit of luster back in.

I usually paint the minis with floor varnish (Pledge or similar), then matt varnish the matt parts of the minis by hand, leaving the metallic parts. Works well.

Depending on the figure, I either do what BigRedBat does or the opposite, which would be topcoat the gloss with matte varnish then paint the metallics by hand with gloss varnish. With a figure with a lot of metal such as full plate armour, I would lean towards spot-painting the matte.

Like you I have found gloss too shiny and considered mixing a mid-gloss, i.e. satin.

Finishing off with a light spray of Vallejo satin varnish (in 400ml spray cans) brought up their colours nicely and put a nice finish on the metallics but Royal Mail restrictions seems to have killed the market for it here in the UK
