Some periods, we have favourite armies we like to play.

Maybe it has a particular historical appeal, maybe it's a political thing, maybe your great grand fathers nephew served, whatever the case you want to play that army.

Assuming available figures, what wargaming periods do you have no preferences for?
In other words, you'll happily take command of anybody?

(This only counts for periods you are actively interested in, before anyone gets too smart)

Medieval – English, French, Flemish, Italian – I just don't care

Dark Ages – Vikings, Saxons, Danes – again, just don't care

Cold War Turns Hot – while you think I would care, I have happily played either NATO or Warsaw Pact

Warlord China – no problem playing whichever

I don't have a preference in any.

Any period that doesn't have an independent Irish presence leaves things up for grabs… in Ancients, I prefer anything I can reasonaby claim was Amazons. Otherwise, its up for grabs.

Quite happy with any of my armies. Mainly Greeks, Persians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Seleucids… never been a real fan of Romans though.

I paint both sides for American Revolution and will happily play either side.
Ditto French and Indian War.

For Colonials, I've again painted both sides of Zulu War, River War, NW Frontier, Abyssinian War, Boxer Rebellion and GASLIGHT. So again, I play any side.

As for other periods, you bring the figures and run a game, and I'll play whichever side starts at the place on the table where I'm sitting.

Alway paint both sides so if I paint it I play it.

Winston's seat-based decision is how I select which side I'm playing, too.

ACW prefer Union but will play any.
WWII prefer Allies but will play any.
Aside from that will play any side.
Side where I'm sitting works.

Spanish Civil War
British Colonials
American West.

Most other periods I have a preference but willplay either side.

Good question. I don't think there's any conflict that I'd have a major preference for. I suppose certain scenario driven games would have an influence .ie German vs Allies no real preference but with a Pegasus Bridge type scenario I'd prefer to be the attacker.

Oh Ivan the only exceptions would be a conflict involving either the Irish or the Vikings. I'll always be the Irish if possible and I'll always be against any Viqueens 😊

I prefer to play all the sides of a conflict.

Am I playing? Then it doesn't matter too much

Like others have said, I'm just happy to play. One instance that came to mind, however, is the Peloponnesian War, in which I'll happily play either side. Though I generally prefer the Athenians (and allies), there is a allure to the dour, long-haired Spartans as well.

John the Greater12 Jan 2017 8:45 a.m. PST

I'll take most anyone in ancients, though I do rather prefer the challenge of fighting against Romans.

Actually, I don't care who I play in any period except ACW (where I always play Union).

TKindred Supporting Member of TMP13 Jan 2017 12:07 a.m. PST

I don't play anything that I don't have an interest in, especially one side or another.
