I don't see a lot of discussion of this set.

What are your impressions? Are you getting good ECW games out of it? Is the support material useful for army building and painting?

We use it almost exclusively for the ECW and TYW. It gives a reasonable and fast game. I personally prefer Gush but my local 'mates' don't.

I have a copy of the rules but have not yet used them. They seem fairly complicated and I'm not really sure I could teach them to another player.

I don't think the Wars of Religion book would be good for painting, the are some pictures of models and some Osprey plates for some of the armies but I think you'd be better off getting something specific.

For army building there is a good ranged of army from the TYW to ECW. The lists seemed good enough to me and they have a small section for some armies where they explain their reason if any decisions require it.

We played them for awhile, but quit after awhile. Seemed too much of a grind perhaps. There is no command friction aspect. It seemed fine for smallish TYW games.

There isn't much painting info in the books.

flashman – there is a website dedicated to the FoGR rules here, including a section for finding opponents, and others for explaining the rules, building/developing armies, etc:
