I am thinking about buying for myself as a late Christmas present, Bruce Catton's books on U.S Grant. I was wondering if some fellow TMPr has read them and could tell me if they are worth the price or if I should look somewhere else. |

Bruce Catton is one of the finest writers in the English language. If you haven't already got his Army of the Potomac trilogy I would go for those first. But seriously you can't go wrong. Everything he wrote is well worth having. |

I have ordered both the trilogy and Grant takes Command… I only wanted Grant's but, well, you have sold me the whole deal! |

Catton takes dry facts and turns them into a narrative, almost novel-like in nature, but doesn't romanticize the work. |

Lloyd Lewis, who wrote the first volume of the Grant trilogy, was also an excellent writer and historian (who unfortunately died before finishing a second volume; his widow passed his notes to Catton). |
