The British did cover up the Exercise Tiger slaughter very effectively, by threatening the locals there, as well as the soldiers/sailors involved in it (mainly Americans, but some British), for quite some time, e.g. 25 – 30+ years, or so, IIRC, so it is possible, I suspect. More than a few Germans are suspected of parachuting into GB back in the day, one a high ranking officer who was supposed to negotiate a treaty/surrender with Churchill, prior to the Battle of Britain. We still don't know the true facts on that one, due to Britain's secrecy laws meant to keep their politicians and leaders from being embarrassed by historical facts. |

The .30-06 was the standard US cartridge,Garand/Browning M1919 etc. The coast on the IOW and nearby Dorset coast was used extensively by US Ranger battalions in training for D-Day.An emphasis was placed on live fire exercises to accustom the troops to the noise and shock of battle. Not wanting to dampen your enthusiasm though, I recall my grandparents tales of ' German soldiers' being washed up on the local coastline…….. |
