As work towards my upcoming Triumph of Death"late landsknecht" undead army to be ready for my kickstarter, I figured I had best have someone for them to fight against, so I've dug out my old renaissance army and started rebasing it.
I have to say, for large army forces the multibasing is starting to win me over.
For more rantings about accidently painting shoes and stripped hose brown while basing, march over to my blog. skullandcrown.blogspot.com Cheers Ths |

All your rebasing are belong to us. |

How exactly are you defining "multibasing'? |

What rules will you use? Does it use a roster system? |

Rich- by multibasing I mean several figures affixed to one base, in a "vignette" setting, as opposed to each model on a separate base. 79th- I'm basing these guys up for Kings of War rules, which does have a roster system. I can use these guys for both fantasy and historic. Cheers Ths |

Oh, ok. Pretty much all my figures are based like this, never heard it called that before. |

Years ago I gave up on different bases for arquebusiers and pikes. Now I have 28 Pikes and command and 32 arquebusiers on the same stand, four ranks deep. |

Ottoathome- You are obviously a pro at this! I'm still working my way up to that scale…:) Any pics? Cheers Ths |

Dear Skull and Crown. I'm hardly a pro. I'm just lazy --a guy who got tired of fiddling with it. I have lots of pics but I have no way of posting them on TMP. If you want some , send me your e-mail to mine at sigurd@eclipse.net and I'll post you a dozen or so. One of the reasons I gave up on it was I realized that the musketeers or arquebusiers were rarely used outside the close proximity of the pikes, and so I just decided to 'up the scale" of the game and do so. I kept around about a dozen stands of arquebusiers and other skirmishers for each side to do detatched duty with. Once these were eliminated I rationalized that no more could be stripped off the pike blocks without great detriment to the interrelation of pikes and musketeers. the other reason was I got tired of players stripping them off and creating on one hand huge "shootey' masses and on the other huge "phalanxey masses." |

I've often thought about using much bigger bases but I always come across the same impediment – what if they are marching down a road? Consequently, my widest bases are 60mm with up to (for my 28mm crusades stuff up to 8 figures a stand).
For my Italian wars I went for a maximum of 6 28mm figs on a 45 x 45mm base. It works pretty well even with big units – though I've just started making movement trays to speed things up.
Big units (especially for pike) are the way forward for this period, but I'm not convinced by extra wide bases when a movement tray would serve just as well. You have nicely painted figs and a good basing technique though. Well done. |

Different strokes. I like my battlefields to look good, and the wishes of the players to make cutesy little reorganization is of no interest to me. My Swiss for example are organized in three sections, advance guard, main body and rear guard moving forward in echelon. There are a sprinkling of light cavalry as scouts. The advance guard is 36 figures on each of two 5" wide 4" deep stands.(72 figures total)- about half arquebusiers and crossbowmen the rest pikes and halberds. The main body is 72 figures on each of two 5"wide by 6" deep stands. (144 stands total). The rear guard is the same as the advanced guard. Don't care if they are marching down a road. This protects the figures and they look good, like those big pike blocks you have in the photo. What convinced me was lack of broken off pikes and bent figures after a game. The massive stands means players have to use two hands to move and can't grip a bunch of stands in "the claw" in one hand when moving. Much the same with cavalry- 12 to 16 figures on one big base. Lead lances are even more fragile than pikes. |

Ottoathome- your approach sounds very interesting; I would like to see some pics too. You don't have a blog with pics? |

Olicana- love your Gendarmes! that is one great looking battlefield. Thanks for sharing the pics. Cheers Ths |

Dear Codsticker Nah, I don't do blogs. I'm not that interesting. I publish a print only newsletter and run a convention. If you want pictures just send me your email to my email at sigurd@eclipse.net , and I'll send you back a dozen or so. I suspect that one of these days one of my battle reports I sent to Bob and Cleo Liebl, editor of the HMGS newsletter will be published. That will have pictures I them. Otto |
