Nice Work!

Maybe easy, but beautiful just the same. And those meat balls do indeed make a good target!

Nice work.

I'm not a naval guy, but I've got this exact project pending as well. What gray did you use for hulls? Any tips?

idontbelieveit31 Dec 2016 4:38 p.m. PST

Yeah. I would have thought the gray was a little darker but I needed to match the flight decks I figured. The Foundry Slate Gray C is a very good match for that – I don't know a Vallejo equivalent (I have a bunch of good grays from Foundry so don't have any VMC grays to compare them to).

I find it easier to base the figure, put some grit on the base (to catch a dry brush later), then prime and paint the whole thing. Make sure the deck is white and has a gloss seal on it when you put on the decal and it will go on very smoothly.

They look real nice, IMO.
In my experience, it's hard to find a wargame where you have (or need) carriers on the table though. You'd have to be using a system that allows air attacks to be played out on the tabletop.

beautiful job!

They look fantastic!!

How about your basing technique? I'd love to steal it, from A to Z . . .

idontbelieveit31 Dec 2016 9:41 p.m. PST

Sure.

It's pretty simple – I got some clear bases from Litko (1.5mm thick, 25mm wide, various lengths depending on the ship). I glue the ship onto the base.

After that dries I smear a little grit on the base – I use Liquitex Ceramic Stucco thinned down with a lot of water. It goes on pretty thin but when dry you've got an uneven surface. I try to build up a little bit at the bow and trail that out to the sides but mostly I make it look like disturbed water with painting.

I then prime the whole thing.

I paint the base blue (I used blue #2 from the Andrea blue paint set). I very dry brush light grey (I used Foundry Austrian White A) all over the base then do a not quite as dry brush of the same light grey concentrated at the waterline of the ship (you'll probably have a little grit on the hull of the ship) and on the wave lines you want. Then I do another very dry brush of white on the wave lines. That's it.
