So I bought the 40k Battle for Battle for Vedros boxed set but after doing more research decided that 40k just wasn't for me due to the expense of books, the rule treadmill etc. I have most of the Laserburn stuff and would like to play it because I dig rule sets with some significance to the hobby. I have a cousin who is new to gaming that wants to play. How rough would Laserburn be as an intro game for small skirmishes? I'm an rpg vet with some wargaming experience and the rule set looks like a fairly straight forward d100 system to me. Does any of the material in Advanced Laserburn and Aliens add anything to the game that is needed? Are there any pitfalls to the system I should be aware of? General advice? I want to start with running a skirmish between four space marines and a handful of orks. |

From an RPG perspective it isn't too bad, but it IS very dice roll heavy. Roll to hit, roll for location, roll to penetrate armour, roll to penetrate screens, roll for injury level, roll for knockback, roll to roll :-) Start off without force screens and simple weapons and have fun, it is a great old system and it's easy to build it out into a little campaign following the same characters. Do note that heavy armour is quite powerful. |

There's also a 40K variant for FUBAR, which is free. |

Play Clash on the Fringe with the figures instead (it's written by Weasel who responded above). We've played some fantastic scenarios with it including many in the 40k universe. |

And there is also In the Emperor's name. I recently played Laserburn again and it was a blast, though I wouldn't use full auto weapons for the first games as you have to calculate every single shot fired and it is a bit tiresome (use pistols, rifles, shotguns, grenades and swords). I found the advanced rules very role-play heavy, unnecesarily complicated which did not add anything to the game. I read it but never used it. Here you can see my game (I played it solo): link |

Thanks for the advice everyone. Really what I'm looking for long term is a good system for low model count sci fi skirmishes. Laserburn looks decent for that. In the Emperor's Name also seems pretty cool. I will check out Clash on the Fringe as well. |

In the Emperors Name is really nifty. Very story oriented. Let me know if you have questions about Clash. |
