I haven't played 40k in 8 years , so I have some questions.
is there going to be a new version coming soon so I do not have to buy a current edition? are khorne berzerkers still in the chaos marine book or are they in khorne daemonkind?
i have a World Eaters army and i do not use Daemons. Is an all Berzerker army still competitive?

Rumors are that there is a new edition coming early in 2017.

2nd quarter of 2017 and it is goin to be very different from previous versions according to rumors on Bell of Lost Souls.

chuck05 Fezian19 Dec 2016 8:19 p.m. PST

Ive heard they are going to give 40k the Age of Sigmar treatment which will pretty much kill my interest in 40k going forward.

There are plenty of options for a replacement so I can still get some use out of my figs.

Khorne bezerkers are in several books. They are in codex CSM as elites .. they are also in the KDK book .. which is strong . If you want pure World Eaters then Traitor legions mini codex is what you want (you will need codex CSM too) .. the Maelstrom of Gore with Kharne and the Berzerkers is a probably as good as it gets. Is it competitive ? Depends on you local meta.. but it's fun

I personally think 40K could use a shake up. The last major rules revamp was between 2nd and 3rd, I just haven't enjoyed the game much since then.

Pictors Studio20 Dec 2016 9:25 a.m. PST

I too am looking forward to a change in the game. We are still playing 3rd edition. I would very much welcome an AoS style change to make it easier and simpler to play.

As well as cheaper as all the rules are online for free.

I hear they're going to give 40k the Age of Sigmar treatment, which is going to rekindle my interest in the game after many years. Right now I'm getting my 40k fix via One Page 40k and In the Emperor's Name. The mothership could lure me back, though, if they found a way to strip the game down to its bare Rogue Trader-inspired roots.

HidaSeku20 Dec 2016 12:48 p.m. PST

I'm currently playing 3rd edition 40k and am keeping an eye on the next 40k edition. If it goes in a good direction, I'll be all over a new edition and get into it. If it goes in a bad direction, no loss for me and I will continue playing 3rd edition.

Part of me hopes they go in a good direction, but there still are some of the ridiculous things they've done that would still annoy me (Centurions, 32mm bases, etc)

1. There are parts of 7th that are way too complicated (looking at you, charging, melee, and wounds distribution).

2. There was much whining from 6th players when 7th came out because 7th was making the units too generic (standardizing special rules and putting them in the main rulebook.

3. Long-time WFB players nerd-raged over Age of Sigmar when it came out. The game had been dumbed down to 4th-grade levels!

4. Many players were mollified when the General's Handbook (?) came out.

5. Many players were mollified when they found how quickly and smoothly AoS games were, which made the games more enjoyable.

6. AoS has. apparently been an enormous success and has re-invigorated the fan base. Cool miniatures releases and an interesting new narrative seems to have contributed to this--a lot.

So, I'd wait for 8th instead of shelling out for a lot of 7th books.

For 6th/7th players, wait before passing judgement. Yeah, it may be too simple for those with a taste for the crunch. Or, it may prove to have hidden depths …

PapaSync20 Dec 2016 1:31 p.m. PST

The new Ed sounds OK. But are they going to charge $75 USD for rule books again?

emckinney20 Dec 2016 4:49 p.m. PST

Age of Sigmar (very short and simple) rules are free as PDF or in a really sophisticated app. Unit stats ("warscrolls") for a large range of starter units are free as PDFs and as part of the app as well. You can also get print copies. The General's handbook, various expansions, etc., are are all additional costs ($16 for the General's Handbook, for example).

Download the AoS app, check it out, and and see what you think about the value. I strongly suspect that we'll see something very similar for 40K. Yes, if you want to buyDr every single army book, it's going to add up. So, yeah, you'll give GW a pile of money, but the core rules, including the General's Handbook, are very reasonable. GW seems seems to seems to be looking to drop the barrier to entry for for new players.

Yes there has been mention of an "End of Times" for 40K.

WFB had an "End of Times" as well and now it is dead.

Pictors Studio20 Dec 2016 6:24 p.m. PST

"WFB had an "End of Times" as well and now it is dead."

And by dead, of course, you mean has a figure range that is doing better than it has in years.

Mithmee20 Dec 2016 6:41 p.m. PST

No by dead I mean Warhammer Fantasy Battle is gone.

As for the figures most are horrible and way overprice.

But we have already covered that.

Pictors Studio20 Dec 2016 7:57 p.m. PST

Apparently they are neither horrible nor overpriced. They are selling like hotcakes.

GW's profits are way up. People love AoS. Warhammer Fantasy Battle isn't gone, I saw people playing it at the store two weeks ago.

You were wrong three times in a post with only three sentences. Impressive.

Capt Flash21 Dec 2016 12:53 p.m. PST

I look forward to a simplified game, but do enjoy some of the current edition. This new Traitor's Legion codex has given me my Iron Warriors back for the local league.

Mithmee21 Dec 2016 5:27 p.m. PST

They are selling like hotcakes.

Not where I live they don't.

Mithmee21 Dec 2016 5:28 p.m. PST

They are selling like hotcakes.

Not where I live they don't.

As for their profits I will wait until they put out their annual financials.
