Which brand or product do you recommend?

Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Filler. It can be reconstituted if it starts drying out. It can also be thinned, which can sometimes be used to interesting effect.

I do some wood work on my blog Wooden Warriors, and that is the one I have used before for filling between wooden parts and to make simple shapes.

I coat my 3D printed figures with Earl's wood hardener before painting. Earl might be the local version of Elmer.

Elmer's. Easy to use, convenient package, dries quickly, works very well.

Depends on the use. I like MinWax Wood Putty for making the scenery base for DBA camps. I layer the basic shapes with chunks of balsa/bass wood, and then schmear the wood putty over to build the actual contours and give it some ground texture at the same time.
