Our local gaming club recently moved to Slack instead of regular email. I was dubious at first but am now a huge fan. Why?

Keeps all the chatter out of my inbox.

Lets different groups have different "channels" so I follow Monday night (mostly historical miniatures) and ignore Thursday nights (boardgames) and Saturdays (can almost never get to the game anyway).

Great way to see what the game is for next week, preview pics of the board, talk about rules.

Use it for work, that's an excellent idea.

One of the rule sets I'm interested in went that way. I never think to check it, so now I'm out of the loop. Personally, I prefer push apps (like the old yahoo groups). But then, I don't like change much.

I use it for work, but that's not a bad idea.

The problem with Slack is that you can't be logged into two at the same time.

We use it at work, so on that computer it's only work Slack that I can see without signing out and back in to something else.

I'd use a Slack version of TMP in a red hot second though…

@Stryderg:

The latest version has desktop notifications (i use it on my phone mainly). My phone "pings" but I have not turned on the desktop notifications.

@Fergal: Didn't know that. It does limit the usefulness. You'd think they would make it easier to belong to more than one…

I read an article on Slack that said the latest version let you tab between slack groups so you could use work and social ones alongside each other…

That will be key, thanks for the heads up. A few guys are trying to get it to gain momentum at work and that's the one sticking point. Solve that and there are few downsides.
