I use Dept. 56 house for my Civil War and 1870's European "Imagination" games. They have just the right "toy sensibility" about them. Most importantly, they can be found in 4"-6" footprints. Houses specifically scaled to 54mm are far too large. (My playing area is limited to 4x6). The catch is that they have no Asian/African/Middle East- style buildings. (They did at one time have Middle Eastern, but these were a bit large). So, what do you use for these areas? Besides JG, is there another general terrain source? Apologies for the unnecessary crossposting. | | nnascati | 19 Dec 2016 10:00 a.m. PST

Tom,Depending on how fancy a model you need, Middle Eastern style buildings are pretty easily scratchbuilt from foam board. For 54mm buildings, the ticker version would probably be better. Make the basic shape with windows and doors, and cover with dyed spackle.

Michaels craft stores often have unfinished wooden houses that are roughly to scale. I also use the generic paper mache buildings they sell at Hobby Lobby. They are super easy to convert or add floors to. Check nativity sets for Middle Eastern style buildings and backdrops. Michael's had wooden Pagoda towers at one point I'd just make my own Arabic buildings from foam core and Spackle. The coconut liners for crafting flower bowls and the like are handy for dome huts: | | thorr666 | 19 Dec 2016 11:10 a.m. PST
