I know the Lithuanian uhlans have a czapka with black leather base and white cloth above with raspberry coloured lace. Was the top of the czapka white or black? I would have thought white, except the Osprey on Russian cavalry says "the czapka had a black leather top". Most illustrations I can find don't show the top. Any help appreciated. |

Would you believe both? Apparently, the 1803-1808 version had a white top, edged and crossed with the standard tapes. Viskovatov notes that in 1808, the tops of the lower ranks' czapkas were lined with black leather to give them more strength. The 1812 ref I have shows an officer with the older version and a trooper with the black top. Reenactors seem to have a mix. I am definitely ordering the Cavalry side of Army of Alexander 1…much simpler to answer these questions. |
