Anyone play this version of the Sword and the Flame? What are your thoughts? I have a lot of stands of British Colonials, Dervishes, Pathans, Zulus

It's a version of TSATF to allow much larger games to be played.
It retains the same basic mechanisms, but its refined for speedier play.

I like it.

It calls for multiple figures per stand, so if you've got an idea on how that may work for you, buy 'em!

Thank you. I have tons of stands…..over 2,000 figures all together.

So if my Zulus and Madhi troops are based multiple figures per base, but my Brit are individuals, would 800 Fighting Englishmen be a better rules choice?

Winston Smith18 Dec 2016 4:06 p.m. PST

If you want to fight "large" battles, yes.
Try magnetic bases if your Brits are on washers, or Blue Tac if not for sabot bases.
Or you could "rank them up" etc.
best to have ppposing bases match.

I am familiar with it, is it available, heard it was out of print. Would TVAG have copies or reprints, perhaps?

I like "800 Fighting Englishmen" but for games with multiple figures on bases I've turned to David Bickley's "A Good Dusting" for the Sudan and "Washing the Spears" for the Anglo-Zulu War.

I like 800FE, use it, and also use my own "mash-up" version of it which retains some elements of standard TSATF rules. And all my figures -- man many hundreds of them, often used in very large colonial games -- remain single-based.

I've got about three thousand individually based figures that I use for TSATF and a home grown rule set but a couple months ago purchased a collection of approximately 500 figures on bases of multiple figures. "A Good Dusting" and it's kin work well with both as does 800 FE. It's nice to have more than one enjoyable set of rules to go with whatever the current mood is amongst the group.
