Oh the figures are truly brilliantly modelled and painted….but in parade dress and not what one might expect from a few nights in an early Russian winter.

The ambulance is Second Empire…I loved it and wanted to make it…but it is from 50 years later. Imagine the poor chap continuing to wear that helmet…or even carrying a mate on a stretcher! That is real devotion…it did not happen

The helmet with scarlet crest is consistent with those used by some sergeants assigned to protect the eagle bearer, after 1812. Note the pistols on his belt, also consistent with the eagle protectors.

The other carrier is a sapeur, oddly still with bearskin, from a line regiment.

The overall composition could also represent Napoleon leading the Grande Armee into Spain after the Baylen surrender, and then climbing into snow-covered mountains in the pursuit of Sir John Moore's forces. No helmet at that time, and the Polish Guard lancers did not yet have the lance, but very colorful.

Perhaps it is a column of the dead, climbing to
"Valhalla," the warrior heaven. Did Valhalla allow French?

If the figures are on separate stands, hidden under the snow, useful for many gaming purposes. Nicely painted!

Excellent composition and modelling. Let down by the lack of winter clothing and the French blue is too light/too blue! Good to see though.

Yes needs winter clothing.

I always liked this book, just for that reason:
