Three Gandharan cosmetic lids with hunting scenes of horse-archers, Hephthalite(?), 4th-6th centuries AD

One is from the Kronos collection, one from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and one from a private collection.
A large plume hanging under the horse is common to all three.

The composition of that from the Kronos collection may have been influenced by plates with figures from Persia and Central Asia (and bowls, cups, cameos, plaques, paintings and textiles with similar iconography).
The plumed helmet of the 3rd horseman is typical of the Alchon Huns.

Those are cool. I wonder why anyone would want to hang a plume beneath a horse….

Protection against a slashing blow, to draw the opponents eye and decoration all come to mind.

The first figure seems to have a mail shirt and some sort corslet unless my eyes deceive me. Is he wearing trousers or is it armour I wonder?

The Kronos collection rider is probably wearing baggy trousers like the 3rd illustration. The pattern on his torso may be mail or embroidery etc.

"Those are cool. I wonder why anyone would want to hang a plume beneath a horse…."

Probably a shoo-fly. They are still used.
