Protection against a slashing blow, to draw the opponents eye and decoration all come to mind. The first figure seems to have a mail shirt and some sort corslet unless my eyes deceive me. Is he wearing trousers or is it armour I wonder? |

The Kronos collection rider is probably wearing baggy trousers like the 3rd illustration. The pattern on his torso may be mail or embroidery etc. Druzhina Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |
