I've seen photos of old soviet overcoats that looked both greenish and brown, so I think there was probably considerable variation.

I find WW2 uniform colours problematic when I'm painting. General wear and tear, different places of manufacture and the general unreliability of 1940s photo colour means you can can find a lot of variation in supposed uniform colours.
