Firstly, I have no experience of the Berthier rules.

I was wondering if it would be possible to use them for the detection process in submarine games?

Surely these are the games in which hidden movement is supreme.

Sure, why not?

A WW2 convoy campaign game is all I have used Berthier for and it was very successful – several years ago now but it worked well for hidden movement and detection. We had a lot of fun recording the warship, cargo and submarine losses from the resultant table games. These days I prefer to use Mal Wright's Deadly Waters and Convoy system so I have not revisited Berthier.
