I'm deeply invested in 40K/30K, but I love Warzone a whole lot. Mainly first edition, although I'm hearing good things about the current 2nd edition of Warzone Resurrection.
So I'm really hoping it takes of and becomes a gaming store regular where the game as a whole is easy to stock, and people start playing. But naturally, I'm reluctant to get invested into this only to see it vanish in a couple of years.
Anyone have this game stocked at your local shops? If so, is it taking off as a game or sitting in the shelves?

I hope that your game comes off and that people really pick up on the new Warzone. I read the Warzone comic when it was out about 20 years ago and enjoyed it.

I haven't seen Warzone in any of the four local stores I visit on any kind of a regular basis.

If I were you, and you like it so much, start playing it, buy the sets and play at your local store. Set up demo games with the rules and see if the store will support you by telling people about it.

If you put together a good scenario and people have fun playing it they will buy in, not everyone, but probably enough.

We were discussing Antares on the FB group, the exact same issue you are talking about. A former store owner said the best thing to do is if you have a buddy also into the game, just start playing regularly at the store. Not demo games, just play, with good terrain and well-painted armies, and people will be attracted to a game where two people are obviously having fun. I'd like to try this experiment out at my local store, using Antares.

Damon.

Figures incompatible in scale to the original game has not helped it's chances. The latest edition has not emerged anywhere around me that I can tell.

I too was very invested at one time even if the fluff had trouble reconciling steam powered transportation and no computers with interplanetary travel.

I am another 1st edition guy. I bought into it for EXACTLY the reason described above. I saw cool looking games that guys were having fun in. I was hooked. I was very excited to hear the game was being revived. I was in on the kickstarter for the rules. I own every faction of Warzone's previous incarnations so new figs were not a MUST HAVE for me. I was disappointed that the army lists were so sparse compared to other versions. I also was not thrilled about the focus on the Warlord and the cards.

I have decided to either stay with 1st with some tweaks or to use another set I tweak for use with my armies. Sadly, I have no real interest in the new rules and I suspect that is likely a general view held by many others. Prodos screwing things up certainly did not help matters. I LOVE the universe. Just does not appear to be what I was looking for. I'd still play in a game though if it was run by someone else. Hope eternal? grin

Thanks.

John- the FB group looks pretty active. I'm in the process of trying to lure a few of my locals with photos of the new models. I personally have all I need, but I do want some of the new mechs/walkers…

Those old Warzone Forum were tons of fun!

I loved the old game, and would love to support a new incarnation, if it was produced by someone else. I refuse to purchase anything done by Prodos, and I was profoundly disappointed by how they have handled it so far.

I still have a tote filled with 400-500 of the plastic Imperial Regulars!

None of the stores in my area carry it because it was kickstarted. Anyone that was interested went in for the kickstarter . The end result though was there were never enough players at any one store to do either demos or just play the game to get others interested.
There was also a bad taste left in the mouths of stores that were around for the dissolution of the first edition of the game.

I've carried it in my store for a couple years. It doesn't really sell well.

Personally, I like a lot of what Prodos has done with it but the cards tend to bog play down too much. I think the second edition fixes a lot of issues but I haven't had a chance to play it. I have run the new rpg quite a bit. Too newfangled for my tastes but actually lots of fun.

So, I have a love hate relationship with the Prodos models. The details are often a bit shallow and hard to read, there are too many fine bits that break off. Don't get me wrong, it's the nicest resin I've ever worked with but it's still resin. Also, the mould release agent is really tenacious and hard to remove at times. The surface doesn't take paint well and you have to put on the base coat pretty thick which is a pain with the shallow detail. On the other hand they're great models. Much nicer in person though the painting in the second (fifth?) edition rulebook is amazing.

You can't really complain about not matching up with the old models as the scale and style were all over the place. Especially after second edition which was more stylistically like the Prodos sculpts. Does anyone really remember the original Etoiles Mortant sculpts fondly? Or Blessed Vestal Laura? YIKES!

I know Prodos is unpopular with some due to disastrous kickstarter screw-ups. But I think it's better that they kept going and keep trying to straighten it out. They could have just disappeared with the money like so many others. Doing what they could to stay afloat and fulfill their promises seems laudable to me.

So, personally the question is what you want out of the game. If you have a small group of friends who want a game with affordable army sizes, cool units, and detailed rules, Warzone would be a good choice.

If you want a game with a huge player base and universal support. If you don't have friends who will follow you in. if money is no object. If the time to paint up large forces is available and you don't mind playing with a lot of unpainted plastic. If your modelling skills aren't up to a somewhat difficult material (though Prodos is increasingly moving to one piece, 'unicast' figures)40k is probably the better bet.

Beyond the Gates of Antares, Infinity, Warmachine, and Dead Zone are all decent and well supported alternatives.
