"IS held Palmyra and its nearby ruins for 10 months before it was recaptured by Syrian government forces in March.

But the group launched an offensive earlier this week, and has captured land on several fronts.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said IS had killed 49 Syrian troops near Palmyra on Friday.

Meanwhile, the US-led coalition fighting IS says it has destroyed 168 oil tankers belonging to the group near Palmyra, in the largest raid of its kind so far. The assault on Thursday led to some $2 USDm (£1.6m) of losses to the group…"

Interesting.

Also heard last night that ISIS is on the attack in Mosul as well, and the troops fighting them there have suffered heavy casualties due to that unexpected event.

Yes, seems they fight back…

So, the amount of 50.000 casualties between the ISIS forces is not true…! (smile)

Regardless … Daesh is generally on the defensive in Syria and Iraq. And Even Libya … They are still alive an kicking. But the only question is, how long they can survive with lack of reinforcements in both men and material, etc., …

Although ISIS has lost its self-proclaimed caliphate, it will continue to be a nuisance making raids and hitting areas where the enemy is weak. It will resort to the guerilla tactic of the underdog, which you can argue it always has been anyway.

It's got mobility and room to roam. Its enemies can't be everywhere at once.

which you can argue it always has been anyway.
Yes, that is the nature of this type of conflict. However, IMO, as long as they stop targeting US and Western denizens. That is best we can hope for.

As I have said, until the moslems workout their seminal reason for these conflicts, the Shia-Sunni divide. There really is nothing more the West can do.

Seems they've retake Palmyra which is a little embarassing for the Russians who claimed to have beaten them back…

Doubt they'll hold it for long though.

Well as we see, generally, Assad's forces and the Russians tend to concentrate on the Anti-Government forces much more so than Daesh. But as I have said, if Syria is ever to return to some "form" of "normalcy". Daesh is going to have to eliminated as well.
