I really love this game. I have read the rules. I like the models. I like the mechanics and the d20 system.
I need a few things cleared up though. It is funny because I usually prefer 20mm and 6mm gaming. 28mm turns me off due to the footprint of the terrain, models, price, etc…

1. Is this game a 40k clone where you rush to the center of the board and throw piles of dice in mass melees? This was always my experience in 40k. Shooting is secondary and hand to hand combat is the primary focus. The game struck me as doing that could be a costly mistake. I have not played the game so I do not know for sure. I also like Infinity as the game favors pseudo-realistic real life tactics. Most encounters are resolved with ranged combat.

2. Do I need the mega box of cards for the faction I want to play?

3. Does the 2.0 advanced combat set of cards replace the mega boxes?

4. Do special characters dominate the game?

5. Do special character's abilities replace tactics and army wide decisions. (Take warhammer 5th edition or Herohammer)

6. Mishima's background stresses close combat. The bushido samurai are mentioned a lot. They find ranged weapons dishonorable. The odd thing is that ever Mishima unit and character has a ranged weapon. The only troop choice that is a samurai are the ronin samurai. They are dishonored so can use rifles.
Where are the bushido samurai wielding swords? The Japanese used rifles in ww2 and had no problem with that. Yes, they charged in combat a lot. Samurai used to fight on horse back with bow and arrow. When did the traditions change in this fantasy setting? And why do all the Mishima samurai use ranged weapons?
Why are there no bushido samurai armed only with swords?

I appreciate any advice or insight.

It has been SOOOO many years. I left 40k for Warzone, as 3ed of 4k was the downfall, and warzone you could throw a grenade.

Your questions are addressed differently per the edition of the rules. 1ed was a Char heavy game, 2ed was a better-balanced system, but fell apart as they did not produce the fraction war books. the 3ed was a great attempt at putting the 1, and 2 editions together. I did not get the chance to play 3ed but I have the rules and tried a few solo games. I can not comment about the 5ed of 40k as that was crap to me as well.

The good thing was there was a website that has ALL the warzone stuff on it, and I have all the books and extras.

The Prodos website has the Warzone stuff for download, IIRC. I'll post the other website for 1st thru 3rd edition stuff later tonight unless someone else beats me to it.

The OP is asking about Warzone Resurrection. Although, to be honest, in light of his opening statements, most of his questions make little sense to me..

For me, it's always going to be first edition Warzone. If you write your forces up according to the fluff, the herohammer-esque issues go away.
And as much fun as 2nd edition 40K was, 3rd edition was a breath of fresh air and superior to the earlier editions, especially for the larger games my friends and I preferred.

Okay, first standing off and shooting and charging into the middle are both valid strategies but neither will win the game for you. Heck, Bauhaus Juggernauts can charge through walls without needing line of sight so it only makes sense to go all Kool Aid Man on your enemies. On the other hand, Capitol is really short on the close combat end so it's all about cover and keeping the range open for them.

Second, the new mega deck replaces the old faction decks. There were some balance issues with the old card system. Personally I'm mostly glad to see it gone.

Special characters can dominate the game. It depends on the army. Big Bob and Mitch Hunter won't but Alkhai and Valpurgis will as one might expect. Heavy tanks trump everything but are only allowed in specific scenarios there is a light vehicle version of each heavy vehicle now, which is a good move, you can still use your model but it won't crush everything in its path.

Special character abilities generally shape what you take in your army, for instance making a specific support choice into a troops choice. But I don't feel they dominate your strategy as the various troops are still available in the usual numbers.

Mishima Ronin Samurai are better at close combat than shooting, sure they've got a rifle but, really they're better with their katanas and it's not an exceptional rifle. I tend to think that the miniatures game confuses the fluff occasionally. The Wolfbanes are supposed to be renegade clansmen but Warzone presents them as the mainline clansmen (who use claymores not punisher blades). So, while one might argue that the Hatamoto are the Bushido Samurai there are probably lot's of lightly equipped household Samurai. It just doesn't sound as cool on the package.

I wish they would have created stats unofficial or not for the older figs as well. I am a 1st edition fanboy. I thought 3rd edition was a good in the mechanics it used. Very like 1st. I did not like the way the army lists were done for third though. Combined with the size of the rulebook I stayed with 1st or used other rules to play.

I was not excited about the cards in the first version of the new rules or the focus on a warlord. We had leaders in our 1st edition games but heroes did not dominate. Plus you could play some pretty big games with it using the big battle rules in the back. The focus on smaller games just didn't grab me. 1st had some issues. But so far, it's still my set of choice for WZ games.

Have to say I agree with you, John. We also played big games but we still used the full rules. 😎
I'm trying to get my locals back into 1st edition, hence my other post regarding Wargames Factory. There are plenty of good proxies for most factions, but the Wargames Factory and Dreamforge figures would be spot on for Bauhaus…
I think that 1st Edition Warzone, played to the fluff, is one of the best games
out there.

The new second edition of Resurrection cleans things up quite a bit. Makes the cards optional. As the cards were pretty unbalanced, that's a good thing. (what? another Bauhaus airstrike? But you're only allowed three of the same card in your deck, but oh no, that's a different airstrike)

But if you want some good Bauhaus and Imperial proxies, take a look at Renegade's WWI range. Glue a piece of plasticard under the rifle's action for the magazine and a bit of tubing under the barrel for a grenade launcher and you're golden.
