I can't believe no one's asked this before. What color would a Victorian RA handspike be colored? The reference I have shows the sponge/rammer a light wood color. Would the handspike be the same or painted grey, like the carriage wood? |

I suspect it could be the same grey as the gun, looking at black and white pics, however… At Abu Klea (1885), a gunner killed a Sudanese warrior with one and it has survived:
So light wood may be correct? Edit: Found a pic of a mountain gun from 1905:

Wooden items were painted to preserve and protect. Even today, the trail spike on the RA's Light Gun is painted the same colour as the rest of the gun (though, admittedly, it is metal). I would paint the wooden item the same grey as the rest of the gun. |
