On a scale of 1 (new) to 10 (prehistoric), how old are the paints you use for painting miniatures?

My newest are about 4 years and my oldest ancient so say 8 or maybe higher.

I have no idea what constitutes either "new" or "prehistoric" as regards paints. I bought a bottle and a tube Wednesday, but some of the tube acrylics date to at least 2003. Some of the Howard Hues could be that old. Everything else is in between.

Bought some yesterday but still have some oils and inks from … well, let's say 20th Cent.

So maybe all of 1 to, say 8?

Still using Polly S that I had stockpiled in fear it would be discontinued someday. I hate that my fears were grounded.

I have paint that is less than a month old, and some that is over 20 years old. Once in a while an old one bites the dust, but not often.

I've snif, just had to put down a bottle of Poly-S Armor Dark Grey from the 1980s. It went down to a last few dregs I couldn't get out of the bottom of the bottle.

When I was forced to face it's impending doom, I launched a campaign to paint as much as I could with it, because this color would obviously match my earlier-painted stuff. I got 30+ 15mm tanks done and about 8 FLAK guns.

It was a truly noble bottle of paint.

Heck, I still have the old Armory horse color set, the CSA set and the Union set.
How long is Armory out of business?

Oh, and a bottle of Native American Skin from the Musket Minis paint line. The best "weathered skin" paint ever.

Is "Native American" allowed?

I have used most of my original 1990's GW paints but I have a few left. I have 8 year old craft paints, 6 yr old Foundry paints, 2-3 year old reaper paints, some valllejo, a few new gw pots plus my 1-2 year old airbrush paints.

I have some Citadel colour still going strong which was bought in about 1999 and some Humbrol acrylic paint from 1987 which sounds like its still liquid but have not opened for years.

Well, I don't actually paint miniatures with it, but I still have a bottle of Comet brand model paint from the late 1950's or early 1960's, and it is still liquid.

I have paints ranging from 1 to 10. The oldest ones are from the 1970s and 1980s. I have a few Heritage brand acrylics as well as Polly S. The oldest paints I have are Humbrol oils still in their tins that I bought around 40 years ago. Occasionally I will open one of these. If the solvent has not evaporated, I usually can recover the paint using mineral spirits. These days I just hate the smell of using mineral spirits so I try not to use them. I still consider those Humbrol paints to be the best paints for plastic models.

For those of you looking for Poly-S; I think "Trains and Lanes" in Easton PA has quite a selection of "new old-stock".

If you're desperate for a particular color, message me, and next time I'm out that way I'll check for you :)

Using those criteria, ancient. Still have GW paints from the 80's that work better than some newer paints I've bought.

It's deceptive, though … all the 10+ ones are large bottles of stock colors (my 'basic' white, black, red, blue, and yellow) and the rest are smaller ones. Most of the stuff on the low end are browns (one yellow ochre) and metallics. The 4-8's are a variety of colors.

A few of them would probably rate 10, since I bought them in the 1990s. The label is "AD&D Paints." Others are a mix of Ral Partha, Reaper, and Citadel. I have a couple of new paints as well.
