Is there any updated news on Daniel's book? |
Uesugi Kenshin | 08 Jul 2019 8:38 a.m. PST |
Old post I know, but this is the first TYW battle I'm looking into doing at some point and I was wondering if Daniel ever released a book. He isn't able to receive any PMs here at TMP so I appreciate any news or updates. |
Daniel S | 08 Jul 2019 9:37 a.m. PST |
Working hard on it at this very moment, it is the first book of several that I am under contract for. The exact date it will be available is up to my publisher and when there will be an opening in the scheduel for that particular series. (Not an Osprey book, I can say that much). |

Awesome news Daniel! Glad I asked. I'll keep an eye out in this forum for further news. Thank you! |

TYW is not my main field of interest, but I will make sure to get a copy of that one :-) |

Daniel S, if you check back here I was wondering if you've seen the GMT game, "Lion of the North"? It covers the battle of Breitenfeld. I wondered what you thought of its order of battle in particular. Thanks. |
Daniel S | 17 Jul 2019 12:22 a.m. PST |
GMT's "Lion of the North" was really the starting point for my own research, the Scenario booklet had a list of sources complete with comments at the end which I used as a "road map" to get to know the period in greater depth. Finding one book on that list usually gave me a new bibliography full of books to track down. The game itself is honestly not very good as a game, the interpretation of TYW combat gives the Swedes superpowers that permanently unbalance the scenarios. Swedish bias would be expected given how the two battles were understood and presented at the time but some of the Swedish special rules simply took things too far. The order of battle is pretty good for the time, like me they used the Swedish General Staff study "Sveriges Krig 1611-32" as the fundation. They then added details from German secondary sources. However, they did use their own invented way of classifying cavalry types rather than the historical one and their pike to shot ratios for non-Swedish units were more or less made up. There is also some misidentification of units, for example they have the Neu-Piccolomini regiment present even though it did not exist at the time. The "Troop Quality" ratings assigned are rather arbitrary and frankly unjustified in a number of instances (Blue brigade and Comargo-Reinach with TQ 6, Småland native Swedish cavalry with TQ 9 (!) and so on) Last but no least it has the same problem with unit positions that every reconstruction of the battle has, there are large gaps in what we know about the Saxons and we know even less about Tilly's deployment. It is so frustrating that we have lost the detailed sketches of the battle made by Olof Hansson, Gustavus chief military engineer at the time. The loss/disapperance of Tilly's archive after the battle didn't excatly help either. |

The new "Play the Thirty Years War 1618-1648" has ob and maps for Lutzen, Breitenfeld and White Moutain. These are somewhat similar to Daniel's fine work and was quite surprised. Some simple rules are also included as well as the paper soldiers. |

How is that book going? Painting, basing my 30yw armies, better not to have to redo😋. |
takeda333 | 08 Apr 2020 2:33 a.m. PST |
Question, Could all of Gustav's inf. utilize salvo fire or just native Swedes and the colors inf. regiments? Some say all and others say the German Merc. regiments couldn't? I'm only concerned up thru Lutzen. Thanks for expertise and help. |

Hi, The book is still in the works, however the ongoing pandemic and my own struggling health has disrupted the work on it and the other books I'm under contract for. |
Elenderil | 12 Nov 2021 1:29 p.m. PST |
Daniel. Hopefully the impact on your health is under control but if not as others have said health comes before writing. If the books are even half as useful as I'm hoping they will be really well received. |

Just thought I'd check in to this how the book is coming along. |
