Was the truce flag carried by Cap. Sims on April 9 1865 attached to a branch or to his sword? I seem to find different answers, anyone knows for sure? And weren't there several other truce flags with messages sent between the lines on April 9?

The flag was actually a white towel and I would think that it was attached to a branch, as branches are not that hard to come by it that part of VA.
