"But probably the most important sf news of the day is that Legendary has secured movie and TV rights on Frank Herbert's classic sf saga DUNE and is looking to make not just a movie but also a TV series out of it! Set in the distant future, DUNE tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man's relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family's control of Ärrakis" From Hollywood Spy. link Good news! Well, one is always of two minds about things like this: it could be terrific, or it could be really awful. |

Like the James Bond books, someday Dune will make a great movie, but, like the Bond books, hasnt happened yet. |

I'll agree with Glenn. The first had a marvellous Jack Kirby inspired look but the story was too condensed. The remake was very… Lawrence of Arabia??? And just didn't feel like the book. And it was still very condensed. So yes, there's a decent movie in there but it'll takes something special to bring it out. And never, ever, mention the follow on books. |

I read the original trilogy and was meh… Some good ideas (who doesn't like sandworms?) but, overall, a bit rambling with too many silly twists. As for the other follow ups by the man himself and his descendants, I didn't waste my time. So I stopped well before volume 14: (Chapter house of Dune meets Abbott and Costello and the Wolfman, or whatever it's called). The film was stunning visually but a dreadful mess (as I'd expect from Lynch). I own the series but have never managed to struggle through them. Are there no other 'famous' SF books that Hollywood can appropriate? Foundation trilogy? Foreverwar? (ahem) Hammer's Slammers?? I suppose on the positive side, at least remaking Dune stops Hollywood making (subtext "ruin") films of books I love or remaking (subtext "ruin") films I want them to leave alone (if they follow through on the threat to remake Forbidden Planet I'm taking hostages…). I read the first Dune book and listened to another one. I'm glad I decided not to read any past the first after listening to that one. The first one was fantastic and would do well to get the Game of Thrones treatment instead of a movie. I would imagine you could get at least two seasons out of the first book alone. |
