I found this very interesting link Local history society account of the militias of Yorkshire including battalion strengths, uniforms, organisation and contemporary assessments of military value. Stovepipe shakoes till 1815 FWIW. |

Mainly chasing Luddites in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1812. Apparently there were more 'soldiers' in the West Riding than in Portugal/Spain. I understand they were quite busy, marching to and fro and generally scowling at the locals. I don't think the government trusted us.Perhaps thought we'd go all French! |

It's interesting that they thought there was a genuine prospect of a French descent on Yorkshire – I guess the Armada and the Fishguard caper support the idea that it would not necessarily be Kent that was invaded. I am impressed by the size of the battalions and that when there was a false alarm the mobilization of the militia went like clockwork. |
