Hi, My brother is looking for a game mat to use as a base for his young sons racetrack board. Seems game mats have gone up substantially in price. Who manufactures cheap single color game mats? Thanks in advance |

Make your own. Start with a piece of felt fro the fabric store. Especially if it is a "permanent" installation |

I got one of those Eco Rugs from Lowes, after reading about it here: TMP link It is actually 8x6, so you could cut it in half and have another one for yourself. $20. USD I sprayed mine with a lighter green, intentionally leaving it sorta mottled. Doesn't look like it will have problems laying flat and smooth. And my guess is that it would be very durable. andy |

The fabric store is a good suggestion as they have a wide variety of textures and colour. There may also be scraps, nicely priced off, that are just the right size for your need. |

Check your local DIY stores for indoor/outdoor carpets, available in: dk. green, tan, blue, and maybe gray? They come in sizes around 9 x 6? Their cost is around $10 USD-$20? They are virtually indestructible -- mine is over 20 years old, and I roll it up, for storage, when not in use. Mine has been unrolled on top of my Ping Pong Table, for less than 50 hours of usage during its 20+ years of use. If your kids spill ice cream, or anything else on their carpet, just take it outside and hose it off; hang it to dry, over a clothes line. They can also be vacuumed easily, as needed. They are synthetic, and incredibly durable -- kid-proof! I had to cut mine down to fit my 9 x 5 Ping Pong Table -- I believe it came as 9 x 6, or 9 x 7. They can be cut with either a razor blade, or regular scissors (utility scissors are a better option). I left mine as is, adding terrain features to the top. I wouldn't mind painting it to vary its finish, but I roll it up when not in use, and I fear the paint would flake off, over time, making a royal mess… Still, it might be worth a try for your purposes. Cheers! |

Wow thanks everyone for the ideas. I'll pass them along to my brother. Also will definitely be keeping this in mind when I require a game mat myself. Once again thanks for the replies and ideas. |

If you want a grid, Monday Knight makes the cheapest plain felt mats I know about: tinyurl.com/grtjubn If not, I agree with all the above about makin' yer own. - Ix |

I found a very good deal at Menards. Dark green golf putting carpet for about $.60 USD a square foot. Come 6 feet wide, I got a piece for my ping-pong table 6 x 9 and cut it down. I got a number 2 feet long and cut it up to 2 x 2' DBA minutes. |
