I heard an ad today for a particular game, with the spokesperson describing as "the greatest game you'll ever play." I thought, "Nope. Not by a long shot." And then I wondered, "so what would be the greatest game I've ever played?" And then I thought, "That would be a great TMP poll." So there it is. What's the greatest game you've ever played. My first choice is Dungeons & Dragons. (I'm not concerned about edition, here. Yeah, some are better than others, but the heart of the game is the same.) What's yours? |

For fun, unpredictability and ease of play, I firmly believe that The Sword and the Flame is the Greatest SET OF RULES. Evah. My Greatest GAME was way back in the WRG 5th ed 80s when my Mauryan Indian army totally smote another Mauryan Indian army. I was just that darned good. Next was a WAB convention game based on the Iliad. I was Agamemnon and captured Troy, and Helen, all by meself. I also shooed away a goddess or two. I was just that darned lucky. |

For individual games I would have to say Risk has provided great games frequently and with various levels of skill still good games. Every version I have played has been good, though I haven't played all versions. If we are talking about rules that are great to play the list gets somewhat longer: The Wargame Johnny Reb Junior General multiple board games Though in all cases I would say that it is the players more than the rules. |

I am throwing in with COL Scott It is the group of players more than the rules. For me the best game I ever played was a 12 team full season of Bloodbowl. |

For roleplaying games, Runequest. No questions and no comparisons for me. It's the game that everything else is compared to, subconsciously. For miniatures, based on sheer influence 40K 2nd edition. For board games, either Twilight Struggle or War of the Ring (the Fantasy Flight version). Purely personal of course.

The most fun I've had wargaming has been with Check your Six! (specifically a campaign out of the 8th Air Force book) and a modified Sword and the Flame Rorke's Drift game at a convention in Oklahoma many years ago. For RPGs, I like Call of Cthulhu---though my group had a great d20 Star Wars campaign for several months, that culminated in an epic battle aboard a Star Destroyer. For boardgames, GDW's The Third World War (I think that was GDW?). |

+1 for Space Hulk. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay was way better than AD&D IMHO, but I'm willing to allow that Call of Cthulhu was more original. |
