Not being familiar with their uniforms and gear, can the French figures be painted as anybody else?

Make? Scale? Era?
For 6mm figures probably get away with it, 28mm may have very specific French features ( e.g, bellybox) which other armies may not share.

I'd suggest you look into Spanish and Italians types, however as Steaming Dave wrote it will mostly depend on size and specific period.

Assuming you're talking about regular infantry, some western Reichsarmee contingents (though Austrians are probably better), or Swedes.
