A while back I was lucky to find in a Hobby Lobby at a discount an old Monogram 1/48 scale Stuka model kit. Specifically a JU-87 D-1. I have wanted to do some LRDG games for some time in 28 mm with the LRDG hitting a small air field and this model will be the start of that project. Someday an enterprising soul will make WW II airplane models in 1/56 the one true scale for WW II. evil grin

Until that time I allow for using 1/48 scale for aircraft to decorate the table top. I use 1/72 models for inbound air to ground attacks.

So before venturing on my own to research the JU-87 D-1 I was sure that one of our number could tell me off the top of their head if the JU-87 D-1 served in North Africa and perhaps direct me toward paint schemes and decals. The decal set (very old) appears to be for the Russian Front.

Thanks,

Kim

Yup saw service with StG 3 from 1942 Can't help with decals but I'm sure that Wings Palette will have some profiles,Osprey Combat Aircraft Units No. 6 Stukas in the Med' & N. Af. has at least two.

Thanks guys, nice link there Ed. I need to see if I can find at least one more of these models and then perhaps a correct period Messerschmidt and maybe a JU-52. I have a cool 28 mm Rommel figure and it could be a neat pulp like scenario having the LRDG or other covert group try to nab Rommel before he boards a plane.

The Stuka at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago was captured in North Africa: link

Yeah but that's a B model not the later D. Very nice video though, I wasn't aware that there was a B model on display in the US, thanks for the link.

Kallman Revell did a Ju-52 though thats gonna take up a lot of table,39cm by 65cm! The Messer' would be a Bf 109 F-4/Trop which I think Zvezda does. If you do the game please post many pic's

PS Rommel frequently used Fiesler Storches might be, a more compact, option!

Hmm… so can I find a Fiesler Storches kit???

Sure, Tamiya do one in 1/48th.

I also use 1:48 planes for my WWII 28mm lads. I now need to do this scenario myself. For some additional Pulpy action, he also flew his Storches by himself a fair bit without passengers. I can imagine him picking up the MP-40 from the hangar, running through a few mags and then sprinting to his plane, P-38 in hand, trying to start it while taking pot-shots as the Brits. Very cinematic!

I happen to have some unassembled 1:48 kits of early war German aircraft that I am loking to unload…
