The Battle of Cedar Mountain marked the first major clash in Culpeper and was also its bloodiest. The Battle of Brandy Station, the opening engagement of the Gettysburg Campaign, was the largest cavalry battle ever fought in North America. The same fields later served as the setting for the largest-ever winter encampment of the Union Army of the Potomac.
