But the question is dogfight IN a movie; not movie with a dogfight.

For me, it's the scene in Battle of Britain when the new kid in a Spitfire squadron doesn't follow the rest of his formation, gets separated, and promptly shot down by a 109 that he never saw coming.

No cute dialogue, no drawn out heroics, no flashback. That always left an impression on me.

Maybe I'm just a bit muddled this morning but I see no difference in the two!

My favorite is this one from the fabulous short film The German. link

When that kid in Iron Eagle does his gun run on the enemy.

Another vote for Star Wars – granted it is not really a dogfight with airplanes but it ripped it off from them and is done perfectly.

Actual whole movie worth of dogfights – Area 88.

My favorite precursor to a dogfight is the "Repeat Please" sequence from Battle of Britain.

The dogfight scene itself, not so much.

Ok, I'll go ahead and say the all too obvious choice since no one else will Top Gun. Great aerial camera footage of modern fighters with somewhat believable scenes of the actors pretending to be fighter pilots. From scanning the sky for 'bandits', to feeling the physical stress of pulling high G maneuvers, the movie did a pretty good job of portraying the drama of it all.

I have three that I love.

From WWI era..I love Blue Max. I also really enjoy the final dogfight in Waldo Pepper.

From WWII..Battle of Britain. I can watch this movie a hundred times and still love seeing bf-109s, Heinkels, Spitfires and Hurricanes in glorious color.

Post War…I like Top Gun. I love the Jets zooming around. I get the sense of my face plastered on the cockpit glassas I search for that elusive MiG.

BoB all the dogfight scenes, not the bomber-killing
scenes.

The Peter Jackson dogfight movie at the Australian War Memorial was awesome. Does anyone know, do they still show it there?

@Nazrat: EXCELLENT. Thanks for sharing. Love the surprise ending. I had no idea.

Great War Ace16 Nov 2016 12:31 p.m. PST

I greatly enjoy the authenticity of the flying in Wings too. Cameras onboard the planes. Actors doing all their own flying. Nothing fake whatsoever. And the neatest thing about it is that the planes are all original.

Blue Max is a pretty film but a far cry from the genuine "swoop" achieved in Wings.

Nothing else comes to mind as a stand out above the rest. I just love dogfight sequences, from biplanes to jets.

Although I have to qualify that with hating a lot of the CGI crap that passes for real airplanes. The laws of physics are dead to CGI.

codiver17 Nov 2016 7:18 a.m. PST

The Battle of Britain!

The dogfights are great; however, when they switch to the model plane blowing up it does lose a lot.
