A proud warrior race?
Debased corrupt servants of evil?
Just another race inhabiting the lands?
Roided up soccer hooligans?
Nomadic tribesmen?

Or some other incarnation of the (possibly) green skinned ilk?

thorr66614 Nov 2016 4:46 p.m. PST

R.U.S.H. definitely

Winston Smith14 Nov 2016 4:56 p.m. PST

Weasel14 Nov 2016 5:51 p.m. PST

I suppose we should have a thread about their colour :-)

Mithmee14 Nov 2016 6:02 p.m. PST

A proud Warrior race that at times seem to be Roided up Soccer Hooligans.

They just like to fight.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut14 Nov 2016 6:05 p.m. PST

It depends on the background I am playing… mostly corrupted servants of evil, occasionally misunderstood hunter-gatherers.

djbthesecond14 Nov 2016 6:12 p.m. PST

I've always thought that the Vikings were perceived by other countries as R.U.S.H. and for good reason but at home the average Viking would have been just like any other tax paying citizen.

I play Orcs similarly ie the warriors in your territory are R.U.S.H but when you are in their lair you would encounter oldies, females and children, like any other society.

Weasel14 Nov 2016 6:13 p.m. PST

I like R.U.S.H. as an abbreviation, you guys are great.
It captures the warhammer/warcraft style perfectly :-)

Crazyivanov14 Nov 2016 6:54 p.m. PST

Something between the early Germans and the Mongols and Manchus, which if you take into account how people reacted to themm kinda puts them between the Debased Servants of Evil and R.U.S.H. now I think of it.

Also, I have Ogres act as larger, dimmer Orcs and Hill Giants as larger dimmer Ogres.

Debased corrupt servants of evil. And yes, they are green.

tkdguy15 Nov 2016 12:21 a.m. PST

Depends on the campaign. I usually have Tolkien-style orcs, but I've also had them as just another race, or even an offshoot of humanity (as were the other races in that campaign).

John Treadaway15 Nov 2016 1:01 a.m. PST

My orcs are Tolkien's orcs, not Jacksons or GWs…

They aren't either green or yellow…

Fighting Uruk-hai!

They're green!

nazrat15 Nov 2016 7:25 a.m. PST

My Orcs (and Orks) are not evil, just misunderstood. 8)=

But they are GW and green, if that matters at all to the discussion.

Andoreth15 Nov 2016 7:26 a.m. PST

Mostly just another race inhabiting the world but quite a proud warrior race if on the warpath. And mine are purple moving from lighter to darker shades the larger they are.

Jamesonsafari15 Nov 2016 7:54 a.m. PST

Tolkien style corrupted servants of Evil with dark skin

Huscarle15 Nov 2016 10:55 a.m. PST

Mine are a right mix depending on what campaign I'm playing, and they certainly aren't green; normally dark hues – black, browns & purples from memory. Either tribal warriors or the great Orcoman Empire (a la the early Ottomans).

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP15 Nov 2016 10:56 a.m. PST

Mine are the soldiery of Mordor and to a lesser degree, Isengard.

And they are green.

Thanks,

Pat

Der Krieg Geist15 Nov 2016 10:59 a.m. PST

My take on orcs is: they are the created evil products of evil sorcery, my orcs don't have( regardless of outward appearances they have no sex and do not engage in it, they are spawned through sorcery) females, young, old or even a society per se. They are just debased thugs that only act toward any sort of order when controlled or thumped into submission/subjugation by those smarter and/or more powerful then they are.

Tolkienesque. Blackish skin (not "Negroid"), red eyes. Foul denizens of darkness and malice.

Patrick R17 Nov 2016 5:49 a.m. PST

Most Orcs are typically either servants of evil or RUSH.

The classic revisionist approach is to make them some kind of Viking/Mongol/Samurai/Barbarian analog, sometimes with attached "noble savage" traits and a complex honour system that somehow never prevents them from invading your lands and defecating all over your gardenias.

I've been toying with variations on this theme. In one of my RPG campaigns goblinkind were a recognized people, much like elves and dwarves, they had a fully developed civilisation, the notable thing being that the smaller goblins actually ran the place while the Hobgoblins were too busy being full of themselves thinking they were the superior caste (mind you, they still made solid warriors) while the big strong, but stupid bugbears made for good manual labourers and shock troops.

But recently I've been thinking about giving dwarves and orcs a distant common ancestor, a major natural disaster (think asteroid impact) causing them to diverge, with dwarves moving into the mountains to escape the destruction, while Orcs survived by finding refuge in an area infused with some kind of primal magic that stopped the destruction, but also affected them into becoming RUSH. The truth about their true background would be too much for either race.

If Middle-Earth or D&D, DCSoE.
If just goofing around with Warmaster, RUSH (but still "the bad guys").

Mine are brutish thugs with only the thinnest sheen of civility, raiding and pillaging to take what they want when they want it. They are quick to justify their actions under any pretexts. They are light orange with blond tops.

Weasel17 Nov 2016 5:58 p.m. PST

If I ever do another fantasy thing, it will so be called "to RUSH or not to RUSH"

wminsing18 Nov 2016 7:27 a.m. PST

I tend towards Tolkein-esque for wargaming, so debased servants of evil usually. If I'm doing something different, I usually cast them as some variation of noble warrior race/barbaric nomads/just another race. Sometimes they start out as servants of evil, evil gets whalloped but the Orcs survive and have to figure out what comes next, and they start transforming in to one of the other categories. I did have one game setting (way back) where the Dwarves had gone industrial fascist and were conquering the world and the Orcs and Humans had to team up to stop them.

I prefer the Orcs from Chronopia.

Aldroud29 Nov 2016 8:02 a.m. PST

The debased remnants of a once sophisticated and advanced civilization. Many of the ancient and mysterious artifacts and ruins were Orcish in origin. Ancient wars brought them low and they have never recovered. Most Orcs now encoutered are merely left over weapons, unable to turn off after the loss of all the controller caste, called Brain Boyz in the racial memory.
