Have not played in years. Forgot how good the rules are.

I have tried sails of Glory. No reason WSIM could not be played using minis.

My guess is this has been discussed a few times over the years. Can someone point me in the right direction for scale and models that would work with the original map?

TIA,

Would 1/2000 Valiant ships work

Oldgrumbler12 Nov 2016 5:52 p.m. PST

It was a miniatures set before it was a board game. I believe I still have a copy. It was called Ship of the Line, I believe.

21eRegt12 Nov 2016 6:01 p.m. PST

I have a felt cover with 1 1/2" hexes, which with 1/1200 models they fit perfectly in two, just like the board game. Ship of the Line was originally played using squares IIRC, and has merit, but WSIM is good enough for me.

The Beast Rampant12 Nov 2016 6:10 p.m. PST

My Valiant 74's are only slightly bigger than my Tumbling Dice and Old Glory 74's. So no, way off from SoG.

afilter12 Nov 2016 6:21 p.m. PST

1/1200 would be way to big. Just to clarify I am wanting to use the minis on the WSIM board.

thestoneman12 Nov 2016 6:30 p.m. PST

I use a mat with 1 1/2" hexes and a 2 1/2" x 3/4" thick base with a hole drilled in to accept the peg from the Sails of Glory ships. Then printed the ship's names with the WSIM nation's colors and glued to the base. Works great. You can also use the shoreline and island terrain from Sails of Glory to add variety.

thestoneman12 Nov 2016 6:33 p.m. PST

Now that I re-read the original post, I see that the original WSIM map board is to be used. My bad. But hey, it was still a great idea even though it had hardly anything to do with the original comment. Wasn't it?

afilter12 Nov 2016 6:53 p.m. PST

No problem while 1/1200 or 1/1000 (SOG) would look impressive I stayed away from them for a reason. ;)

Anyone have some dimensions or pics of 1/2400? I do have a OG army account and the fleet packs would be pretty reasonable with my discount.

The WSIM markers are approximately 0.5"x1" and the hexes about 5/8"

jowady12 Nov 2016 7:02 p.m. PST

In the old days Valiant's 1/2000 scale ships came with a small pamphlet that, in addition to having painting, rigging instructions, and a guide to suitable flags also had a notation that you could use them in WSIM. They recommended using 3 hexes per ship instead of two although IIRC most ships fit in two except for the bowsprits which did hang over. In those days we didn't base our ships. I don't recall if movement and gunnery ranges were multiplied by 1.5 but we did it as a house rule at least.

As has been pointed out WSIM is descended from Ship o' the Line which is a set of miniature rules in which movement is based on squares and it contains more options for game play. Having said that though you can certainly play WSIM with 1/2000 or 1/2400 on the WSIM gameboard with minimal changes. However if you wanted to use 1/1200 or larger you're going to have to use a different hex grid.

Currently there is this to consider as well;

Thanks, based on the measurements my guess is the 1/2400 would fit well then.

These are what I was considering with my 40% discount.

Yes, the OG ships are reasonably priced (provided you want lots of them), paint up quickly and easily, and don't look half bad. And, aside from the bowsprit, are VERY durable.

jowady12 Nov 2016 8:20 p.m. PST

You certainly can't beat the price. I remember when I first got WSIM back in 1976. Up until then I had been playing SPI's game "Frigate" and while I had a lot of fun with that WSIM just blew me away. I've become sort of an AoS rules junkie since, I have a bunch like "Beat to Quarters", "Heart of Oak", "Age of Fighting Sail", Signal Close Action" and "Close Action" and while "Close Action" is cool and sort of a really advanced WSIM with the various inaccuracies worked out I've never had the rush like I did playing WSIM the first time. "Close Action" is closest but since there is so much to do controlling more than 2 or 3 ships (one is really the ideal number) it is almost impossible so unless you have a bunch of friends doing Trafalgar or Glorious First of June or the Nile is just about impossible. The one thing that I didn't like about WSIM (and it goes for the rest of the rules as well) is that they aren't really good at small ship (say an 18 gun brig vs. a 20 gun sloop) actions. I'm planning on getting Post Captain soon to see if it does a good job with those.

Tumbling Dice's 1/4800 AoS ships are intended for exactly this

To use the WS&IM board you will need 1/4800 as Trierarch writes. If you want to use 1/2400 you'd need a hex grid of about one inch hexes.

I played masses of WS&IM. It's not perfect but the best games we had were mixtures of a handful of smaller ships from frigate size down. Playing big games with SOL took so long.

I have a copy of the General magazine that has a load of scenarios based on the Richard Bolitho books. We worked our way through them.

Not true, I've played it with the modifications as I stated, on the WSIM boards. If I could do it with 1/2000 I see no problem doing it with 1/2400.

Valiant 1/2000 on WSIM game board

We played it with my set of 1/2000 all the time. Bowsprits for SOLs and larger frigates did overhang into the preceding hex.

Ship o' the Line by Battleline could be used with a hex map. Its CRT was much more inclusive. Hit locations also included the masts in addition to the sails.

The Valiant minis were DESIGNED to be used on the WSIM board (per Valiant themselves). So you shouldn't have any problems using them with the game. Alternatively, you could use any of the smaller scale minis.

I didn't like about WSIM (and it goes for the rest of the rules as well) is that they aren't really good at small ship (say an 18 gun brig vs. a 20 gun sloop) actions. I'm planning on getting Post Captain soon to see if it does a good job with those.

Post Captain actually works best with small actions (1 on 1, 2 on 2, small squadrons). And it works very well with the smaller ships (sloops, brigs, schooners, etc). Just played a pick-up game that was a heckava fight between a small brig and a topsail schooner. Also, Post Captain has the best movement system of any of ruleset and handles the differences in sailing quality better than any ruleset out there (and I've tried all of them).

Charlie 1213 Nov 2016 3:18 p.m. PST

Hey Buckeye Bob, where's your spanker sails?grin Yeah, I've got a bunch of Valiants too and that damned spanker is a royal pain in the butt to glue on (and KEEP on). Most of mine look like yours ('cept your painting is much better!)….

jowady13 Nov 2016 8:09 p.m. PST

Buckeye Bob and Charlie, man that brings back memories, fond memories. 1/2000 is a great scale, 1 yard equals 1 nautical mile. It almost makes me sorry I moved on to 1/1200th. Thanks for the tip on Post Captain.

Charlie, could you give some detail on the mechanics?

Picked up a handful of 1/2400. Appears these will work very well with the original WSIM board.

Will likely use the original base and file down the ends then mount on the 0.5" x1" based so I can use my magnetic storage.

afilter20 Nov 2016 8:00 p.m. PST

completed my first 6 ships.

2 American Frigates
2 British Frigates
2 British Sloops

Models are 1/2400 Figurehead. I based the Frigates on .5"x 1" metal bases which is the size of the larger counters in the game.

This will allow me to play a handful or scenarios. I can easily add more minis as we get going.

Awesome work Afilter, and the bases are a great fit for the game board. Those are going to be be some fantastic looking games!

afilter21 Nov 2016 12:14 p.m. PST

Thanks, it is always odd looking at pictures which are zoomed in (see the flaws) vs. the naked eye.

These were my first test minis. I may go back and add some minimal rigging using thin piano wire which will also better support the center masts.
