Pulse of Battle by Brent Oman. I love this set. The Trebbia was our last game using them. They play pretty quickly. Have tactical subtlety and allow you to understand WHY some armies had advantages on the battlefield. |

I like Mortem et Glorium. Never had to think so carefully before making decisions but it allows quick closing of the battle lines into action and thereafter exciting combat dynamics. Also loads of troop varieties and tactical nuances. |

"Might of Arms" (I would add as qualifier that I only own Hail Caesar, Might of Arms, and C&C ancients. I most ofter play C&C Napoleonic but C&C series of games are not table top wargames but a hex based board game and I never really got into the ancients version of C&C. Might of Arms is very well written and has a clear logical presentation. Having only played it twice it seemed somewhat boring to play. I've never played Hail Caesar, which appears to be a rather popular ruleset, but upon initial reading the rules seemed somewhat of a jumbled mess. I need to try a game. So of the 3, I would try Might of Arms again just for the fact that it is so well written and organized in its presentation.) |

DBA and BBDBA. In the past, I have played DBM, from 1.something to 3.0, Warmaster Ancients, Warhammer Ancients, and Field of Glory. All of them were great games, but take so many figures to create the armies, that I can't play them anymore. My opponents provided the opposing forces, and I don't have the time to paint them. |

When I started in about 1981 it was WRG6 Then I tried Shock of Impact which seemed to be "hey lets make WRG6 more complicated, bittier, slower and with more points for rules lawyers" Then I tried WRG7/Warrior and disliked them intensely Then to Tactica which I enjoyed but found rather samey Then to Armarti … ditto Then back to WRG6 I'm also experimenting with Dux Bellorum for periods other than post-Roman Britain |

By the way, the basic game of DBA is not a skirmish game even though it has only 12 stands per side. It represents a mass battle where the elements represent divisions of an army. The skirmish version of DBx is DBV. |

Swordpoint. Now that I have had a chance to give the rulebook a good read through, I am confident that these will be my new 'go to' rules for Ancients mass battles. |
