Are there any Stand=Company rules out there? It seems an obvious hole in the market to me.

I second Great Battles of WW2. Not just another set of rules where individual tanks are "called" companies but the rules use the same old mechanics, but a very different set that gives a good feel for large scale engagements.

Yellow Admiral has listed the main ones. I use Tim Gow's NATO Brigade Commander for WW2 as well, at the same scale.

I love FiveCore Brigade commander, they are fast and I like the design philosophy of most fire at this scale tends to drive units out of position rather than destroy them outright.

You could also adapt Neil Thomas's One Hour Wargames WW2 rules.

Another nudge from me for Great Battles of WW2. It gives a very good feel for the battles and is written a lot better than PanzerKorps.

PanzerKorps must be the worst written set of rules I've ever come across.

You can buy just the basic rules (for sale separately at the bottom of every page selling one of the volume), or buy any volume and the rules are included in the book.

How do you rate up units in GBWW2? I played the rules when released. However, nothing in the base set or the followup laid out how to rate up various units, IIRC. We wrote them off a long time ago. Field of Battle WW2 is a clean set with loads of army lists and readily playable. We are doing them with 1/600 scale troops.

Good question, but one that never bothered me. I like writing scenarios. :-)

You can use the scenarios as written in the GBWW2 volumes, or invent your own. I didn't play enough to get that far.

Where one stand represents about 25 vehicles or half a battalion of infantry.

PanzerKorps comes to mind. Played at a HMGS con a few years ago. As I recall, each Vehicle was a company or so, with three to a battalion moving together. Hits removed one of the companies. I don't recall splitting up the companies to go different ways. My guess is that you might be able to use one stand that takes three hits. Been a while since I played.

Have bought a number of their supplement books. Soviet book was pretty good at basic explanation of TO&Es. I think it's Hoplite Research who brought out PzK -- it certainly supports the product.

I'll throw Weltkrieg out there as well. I have not played yet, as I just purchased it and read through it, but it looks pretty good. WW2 isn't my main period, so I can't comment on all the little nuances, but I must say the author did sterling work representing a variety of tactical concepts in the framework of using only one mechanism. A good example of this off the top of my head is that if a fighting Battalion has an attached recon element, that element adds its training score to a firefight, but the downside is that casualties are taken on the recon units first. I don't know what your cup of tea is, but this game uses die types to determine weapon/armor differences, and the all important training rating is added to this in most cases. you basically roll your 3 or 4 dice, add the total up, and compare to the enemies total, giving you the result. you can take hits on your companies, take "command hits", or both. Command hits can be "rallied off", while actual damage cannot. It is based off his sci fi operational rules, which have a cold war module so you can play moderns with the same rules if you like. If you are curious about it, just ask. It is available on Wargame Vault.

PS: top tip; font color means something on the unit stat cards, so don't print those in black and white like a big dummy, like I did :P
