Hi all, I have recently started to be interested in ancients gaming. Have been looking around for one or more suitable rules to game with, but not sure what rules set ti go with. Im looking for a rules set that preferably handle standard battles, sieges/fortress assaults and naval/beach assaults battles. Any suggestions what could work? Ive looked a bit at Hail Ceasar, DBA/DBMM, Sword and Spear, Warmaster Ancients and WAB. |

Don't know about sieges/beach assaults, but ADLG seems to be becoming popular. Martin |

I read about ancient egyptians being the first to do combined arms operations, including small scale landings on the coast of Lebanon and Syria, in Ancient Warfare Magazine. link |

DBA does allow beach landings for those armies that made use of the tactic; Sea Peoples, Picts, Vikings, etc. |

Play what others around you are playing I guess. I'll second ADLG. It seems to be what the cool kids are playing. Sort of a cross between Armati and DBA. Pretty much took the best of both. Lite fare: DBA or Throw me a 6. |

There's been a fair bit of a boom in ancients (and medieval) rules lately, other ones being To The Strongest and the new Gripping Beast one (Swordpoint, I think), plus Basic Impetus is getting a makeover I believe. I'd also add Might of Arms, although I'm not sure of it's availability. Mighty Armies Ancients is also a pretty inexpensive and fast-playing game. |

Might of Arms is a GREAT set, but it doesn't really have siege or landing rules included. Right now, since my own homebrewed rules are stuck in development limbo, I'm probably most fond of Hail Caesar. DBA is always a good option, since you can most always find people who know it (even if they don't play it regularly). Doug |

To the Strongest, has a naval element in the optional rule section. Great set of rules-easy to get into, but hard to master. |

FoG-A, WRG 6 come to mind. |

I adapted Field of Glory to allow assault such as that required for my Jerusalem 1099 game 'Welcome to Jerusalem' … FoG allows for a diversity of formation so suits the nucleated nature of siege warfare and assaults. The only alternative is to use a skirmish system (at risk of losing some of the big picture) .. Slim Mumford's Medieval Warfare still does a good job if you are looking for a simple 'dice, factors and savings rolls' approach to this. Phil |

Hi, DBMM does all you are interested in. Field battles, sieges, and beach assaults. Straight out of the box. It isn't an easy set, which is not surprising given what it can do. But the DBMM-list on Yahoo Groups is a very friendly place to get advice. Cheers, JohnG |

Art De La Guerre are at the moment the best rules in my opinion. The rules are clear, all the army lists are included and there is a Huge Intaernational competeitive scene as well. You can play games of any size and the standard 200 point game can be finished in 2,5 hours and since the standard armies are a little smaller than DBM DBMM you can easily play in 28mm and paint less. These rules have no siege rules though. Lorenzo |

For starters, you just cannot go wrong with Basic Impetus. Simple and what DBA ought to be, but isn't. Otherwise, Warhammer Ancient battles is still a cracking good set of rules, well written, and quite fun to play. |
