I know the Conqueror tank served from 1955-1966. I've seen photos of the tank; one shows a tank of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards c. 1956; the second is one with the 5th RTR in 1960. My understanding is that only one battalion in BAOR was equipped with the Conqueror at any one time. I assume the tanks stayed in West Germany and various units deployed there for service with the Conqueror. Does anyone know which units were equipped with the Conqueror and when. |

Apparently 9 per regiment in BAOR, supporting Centurions, at least according to Wikipedia link |

Sat at a Regimental dinner last year next to an old 13/18 Troop Commander of a Conqueror Troop from the mid 60s. He mentioned that it was a favourite Troop as most would break down at the beginning of an exercise so the troops could sit around drinking brews for the following few weeks! Another source from another Regt mentions that they were reliable tanks. Tally Ho! |

The only Conquerors I've ever seen were usually sitting in a pool of oil with their engines in bits. Iirc they were Ardeley out as support tanks, but I can't recall if it was one troop per centurion squadron, or a complete squadron per regiment. Maybe it was up to the CO. |
