WIth Gripping Beast's Ligurians out of production I'm looking to recreate a similar look with other 28mm manufacturers.

Based on what Allen Curtis and Duncan Head have researched, plus Diodorus Siculus, I understand what I should be looking for is beardy, some moderate swords, the pennato (scythe/falx-like), animal skins, rough cloaks, belted tunic and Gallic shields. Axes are okay. Some archaeology suggests the odd Montefortino helmet which I can mix in from some bearded Celts I already have.

In my quest for the beardiest, furriest and falxiest I thought I might use a combination of Dacians, Dark Age Scots, and Ulfhednar.

Foundry Dacians:

These seem to fit the bill pretty well. Beards, cloak, falx is short enough to pass as a pennato in 28mm.

Crusader Dark Age Scots:

Beardy. Fairly similar to the GB line. Needs shield swaps.

Crusader Ulfhednar:
Beardy, furry, and a bit o' axe.

Does anyone have any better suggestions?

Actually no…

If you go for those and want some Renegade Gallic shields for them, I have several dozen of the things left over from my Punic Wars project. If you are happy to pay the postage, and you promise to actually use them, you are welcome to them gratis.

I got a load of spares ones with this bunch of spikey haired loons

James, that is very kind of you indeed. Let me check my stock of Gallic shields and if I'm short I will drop you an email. (I'm big admirer of you Punic project btw).

Kevin – The only question I have about OG is scale compatibility. I'm using the larger end of 28mm – Victrix, Aventine, A&A, Crusader & Warlord – in the rest of my army. Aren't OG more 25mm, will they be too small?

As far as I know, there's no definitive evidence as to whether they wore long sleeves or short: my long-sleeved Ligurian in AMPW was based on Marco Severino's reconstruction in an old Slingshot, but I never found out his source. So for example Crusader's Roman penal legion with Gallic weapons – link – would be fine mixed in as a few less hairy individuals.

OTOH, I wouldn't worry too much if the OG figures are a bit on the small side, because Ligurians were famously smaller and wirier than their Celtic neighbours.

Oh, and personally I don't really believe in the pennato as a weapon; but other people do.

Duncan,

You could make an argument for the more general use of pants, no? Now that we're looking at long sleeves…

Thanks for the advice. I've ordered the OGs and the Foundry Dacians and will see how they fare. The comment on their slender size was Diodorus, was it not?

(I still have an eye on those Crusader Scots. Nice beards and they could fit quite a few ancient roles in the eastern Med).

I'm sure they panted a lot running up and down those hills. Otherwise, I know of no evidence.

How bout' slacks? Cut off shorts?

What's the basis of your skepticism, Duncan? Is it lack of literary and archaeological evidence? What do others rest it on? (I see some images of rough rock carvings on Google, but not much detail).

I've used Foundry Picts (the older Perry scuplted figures) for Ligurians previously – beardy, cloaks, some trousers and generally quite 'Gallic' once you swap out the 'H' style shields.

Part of my scepticism is that I do not know what others base it on, apart as you say from some rock-carvings; I am not sure how securely these are dated, and none of them seem to show the pennato in use as a weapon. As far as I can see it's just a farmer's billhook.

Thanks for the recommendation on the Old Glory Ligurians. They look pretty good and while shorter of stature as you said, they are chunky enough to stand quite nicely next to the A&A Celts/Celto-Ligurians.
