Are there any books out there with the information most useful for wargamers about the campaigns and battles of the Irish Confederate wars?

kevin Major02 Nov 2016 5:13 a.m. PST

The Battle of Benburb by Clive Hollick has all the stuff a gamer would be interested in. While it is specific to that battle it has a general outline of the war
A number of the military histories of Cromwell have good information about the later period. Beyond that you are into academic style books giving a more general history.
The period lacks a good single source of the military history but quite a lot can be found in the likes of The Irish Sword. Miniature Wargames had a number of gaming articles relating to the big battles.

Catholic Confederates At War 1641 – 49 by Padraig Lenihan is pretty good, though it is fairly academic and has a lot of detail on mobilisation and support of the armies involved.

If you have access to a good library Jerrold Casway- Owen Roe O'Neill is excellent and has detail you won't find elsewhere.

Hayes-McCoy's Irish Battles is readily available and covers a couple of battles well.

There are also a number of contemporarty accounts available on the net. Check the bibliography of any of the above modern books and search online versions of the contemporary ones.

Great suggestions above – this is certainly a subject that would benefit from more military history studies.

Online this site link I found very useful for the general history of the wars and the BCW site here link for chronology and context.

There are some decent online articles on some of the battles.

Gilbert is a major authority and much is online (though not all as far as I can see). Does anyone know if there's a way to access back issues of Irish Sword?

Meanwhile I'm having a go at the Confederate link and 'Protestant' regiments link at the BCW Regimental Wiki, but there's a long way to go!

Thanka very much for the very helpful replies

Timbo, I'm not sure that BCW link is up to much. Its a while since I spent time on this period but a couple of things jarred.

Hi Oh B,

If you like I could pass on any queries to Dave Plant who runs the main BCW site. I believe he's busy with other stuff currently but I know he welcomes corrections etc.

If you mean the BCW Regimental Wiki specifically, then I definitely want to hear about any issues, since I'm running it. Or please feel free to register and get editing. The Irish sections are nowhere near complete as yet and I freely admit I'm just getting to grips with the wars in Ireland. The good thing about the wiki format is that things can be corrected very quickly.

All the best

Tim
