I was going to start collecting a 28mm force for Stargrunt, and already have some of the packs from Copplestone Castings. What line would go with them? Void? WH40k? (though I'd really prefer to stay away from them) OR, do you think that the Stargrunt line of 28mm would work fine? Or is there another choice? |
| Plynkes | 10 May 2005 12:27 p.m. PST |
If I recall right the Stargrunt Minis aren't 28mm, they're proper 25mm, and would look like pygmies or something if you tried to mix them with 28mm figs. They are quite a nice range, though. |

Yeah, that's what I thought, with the pics on the GZG website. Though I didn't really want to start a completely new collection, if I didn't have to... |

The old Grenadier, now eM4 Future Warriors range owuld mix well. They were originally sculpted by Copplestone. The Grenadier figs are slightly smaller than the modern Copplestone, but I feel they cna be mixed quite easily. I have a good number of the old figures and will be dipping into the Copplestone range to fill in certain niches, like the mortar team. |

void/urban war size up with copplestone fairly well. the new viridian colonial marines or urban war look particularly nice as generic sci-fi soldiers as they are fully kitted out in body armor, helmets, and respirators. support weapons like HMG's and mortars are soon to be released. |

I have some of the old Grenadier line...would they mix well with Stargrunt, or not? |
| Rotorvator | 10 May 2005 12:59 p.m. PST |
No, GZG is really 25mm. The cool Pig Iron guys might work well with Copplestone. |

"What goes with Copplestone Castings?" A nice, cold Foster's Lager... |

Ummm...I know it's Excelsior games and they are having some problems taking up where Target left off after the crash but they have two "Assault Force" plastic box sets now that have four squads of ten members in them including sergeants and heavy squad support weapon specialists. Each set is listed as $35 USD US. One set is 40 Imperial Regulars(Look like futuristic WWI Dough Boy/Trencher types with gas masks) and the other is 40 Bauhaus Ducal Militia(look like GW Space Marines with Pickel Haube...kinda'). picture link picture link They could work okay for fast 28mm Army building. |

I'd suggest that the Warzone stuff is too bulky and space-opera cartoonish to go with the Future Wars minis (that's not a criticism - I like some of the Warzone models - but they are doing something different from Copplestone). Apart from the older Future Warriors, em-4 also stocks the minis originally made for Combat Zone, which have a fairly compatible near-future feel to them. The new Mongoose Starship Troopers are similarly proportioned, but look rather more futuristic. Some of the WH40K Imperial Guard figures would fit well too - particularly the Perry-designed ones predating the current larger plastics. The Urban War version of the Viridians might work with Copplestone, but I haven't put any side-by-side to see. |

40K - the new Imperial Guard platics fit in well, as do the metals. Void is a tiny bit thinner, but it's hardly noticeable. Some Future Warriors do fit, but others are rather skinny. Pig Iron. I'm still waiting to find out about TAG. For Stargrunt, though, I'd go with GZG's 15mm. Better fit to the groundscale, and a pile of minis, the range is always expanding. |

Hasslefree minis go well, as do Void, Spyglass, and some of the less elaborate Iron Kingdoms minis. I use Hasslefrees and IK for character models, and Copplestone for the bulk of the fighting force. I ordered the man vs. machine special in March, and just ordered the May special Urban Assault. |

If you can find the China town Minis they fit pretty well with both, as does foundry street violence, just depends on what you're going for the em4 line is really good, and less expensive than copplestone, painted or bare metal. |

Modern Italians by D&P mniatures, sculpted by Mark Sims. I don't have those yet, but from pictures and descriptions they seem fine. Also I've heard Devil Dog moderns are about the same size, while most TAG stuff is more bulky. Some slight adaptions and moderns are near-future. Or they're just old fashioned. :-) Judging from pictures GZG/Stargrunt women might work, as they tend to be smaller than men in real life too. |

The em-4 Resin/plastic Military figures fit well with the curent Copplestone casting figures the Foundry Street Violence range works well with them as do the Warzone plastics and the 2nd edition metals, even though they look a bit more "steroid pumped" the Void range of minis also fits in well with the CC pieces as do certain of the Truant Bikes... and unfortunately the Copplestone figures and the GZG guys do not mix... think "Father and son" outing... I was so tempted to write custard or roast potatoes or even a nice glass of chilled white wine - but I kind of figured that's not quite what was meant. Copplestone figures - how do you eat yours? ;-) |

Modern Italians by D&P mniatures, sculpted by Mark Sims. I don't have those yet, but from pictures and descriptions they seem fine. Nope - I got a sample, and while well-sculpted, it's on the small/thin/realistic side of 28mm, much better for Mo-Fo or Mongrel 28s. Too small for Copplestone. Or they're just old fashioned. :-) If I'm sending someone to a colony world, or through a Stargate to an unknown destination, I'd think very seriously about giving them an AK-47. |

Foundry Street Violence go well with Copplestone. I also use some of the modern ranges like TAG's Rangers. Gorgeous minis and similar proportions and size. The Viridians do work, as long as you pick and choose your models carefully. That said, an easy way to make a varied army is to order more Copplestone minis and paint them differently. With different paint, the same pose can look totally different. Urbans War Viridians are gorgeous sculpts. I got a ton of old Viridians on ebay for average cost of 90 cents a fig. Not bad... Also, I hate to say it, but the Kasrkins go well with all of the above. I picked some up despite my railings against GW and really like them. The skulls are all filed/cut/shaved off and they are quite nice! |
| Norscaman | 11 May 2005 11:14 a.m. PST |
I forgot to mention Hasslefree! Though they might be pricy on a per-figure basis, they also fit if you are looking for characters or special types.. space dwarves, etc. The other Kev White sculpts out there for the genre are those for Sabbotage at the figure trader.com. Gorgeous, though I have seen only one in the flesh. It matches up well with all of the above, but I am making an assumption here. |
| nvdoyle | 11 May 2005 12:00 p.m. PST |
Norscaman - I use a lot of Viridians, which ones have you found that don't fit? I'm curious, I've had huge success with them. |
| palaeoemrus | 11 May 2005 1:35 p.m. PST |
The Skulls on the Kasrkin are easy. It's the de-eagle-ing process that's been a pain or me. :) |
| Norscaman | 11 May 2005 5:54 p.m. PST |
It's a fair question nvdoyle. I think that the Viridians in general are quite nice, while the Junkers from VOID 1.1 are too cartoony. The figures of which I am thinking in particular are: 1. Fenris the Ice Duke 2. Icaraus Trask 3. Mira Haze 4. Any chain-gunner figures 5. All of the dinosaurs I just don't think that they fit well with Copplestone's more realistic style. I did not say realistic, but MORE realistic. I am also not a fan of the banana clips on the assault marines. The Kasrkins are nice once you de-skullify and de-eagle them. I left the eagle on the officer and painted it black. It looks good. But I did have to change the sergeant stripes. |

It can be expensive at 3.50 a figure but the Steel Legion figures are easy to convert to near future. They come with a missle launcher that looks like a glorified RPG, the Greanade launcher looks like a street sweeper, and the laser rifles could pass for battle rifles. The sarge is the biggest problme since chain swords are fundamentally stupid and must be eradicated. I gave one of mine a sabre and the other a hand made Yataghan(think of a longer thinner Kukri/falcata type of blade. Most of them have the eagles on their helmets obscured by their goggles, and they are all wearing gas masks. Really the only pain is getting the eagles off of their rifles. They also have an "S" insignia on their shoulders that comes off easily. They look cool in gas masks and they even have crew serviced man portable support weapons you can buy such as an IG laser cannon and a heavy Bolter(that can be interpreted as variation of a 40mm grenade machine gun like the MK-19) with the crew lying prone. You can also set the Laser Cannon crew up with a Mortar(from an IG plastic heavy weapon box or other source...or just built one!) and it looks pretty good. |
