Just got back from visiting may aunt, so I stopped by Fort Steuben on the way home since I was right there.

My dad donated a ton of stuff to the museum, so I have photographed some of his donations (a lot of the large wooden display boxes and wall frames that you see), and took various pics of the fort. Note that the sally port would have had a pretty good view of the Ohio River. Also note the fields of fire through the blockhouse musket ports, and that the block houses are positioned so that they cover the close-in part of the adjacent blockhouse.

I hope it is of some interest to some of you.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I have not been to this fort yet, but it looks like it's well worth a visit.

Thank you for this. I don't recall a fort with the blockhouses set at an angle like these are. I'm surprised they still give good fields of fire along the fort's walls. Learn something every day.

Nice.
No way to shoot out from the palissades? Looks like a POW stokade then!

Thanks for the pics, Joe! That is quite the donated collection!

Matt, it is worthy of a stop. While Steubenville is a typical Ohio River town with its challenges, the fort is fairly well done. Not as stellar as Fort Ligonier, but pretty cool.

Yea, about 10 grand worth of stuff. My dad went whole hog into the fur trade era.

Matt, it's about 3.5 hours from Dayton. Like Darryl noted, it is an old coal and steel area that has been hit hard, but, if you are interested, there is a giant Cabelas in Wheeling, an EHL hockey team, and a casino; you are also pretty close to Pittsburgh. If nothing else, you can go visit my aunt for a couple of hours and have a piece of cake.

Thanks for sharing the pix, I thought the Fort was nicely presented. Quite a remarkable donation to the Fort also.

Grew up three blocks from there, but we didn't have the fort back then, and it wasn't as nice in that area in those days.

Be sure to stop and get some DiCarlos Pizza while in the area. It is not New York, Chicago, or west coast style, it is much better than those.

Joe, Darryl,

Sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out someday. I have relatives in Pittsburgh, so I could visit them, not sure they have cake though… ;), and see the fort on the way back.
