Sci-Fi painters get great results with air-brushing but I'm not set up for that and nor do I have the experience or skills. I don't feel I can justify the investment in money, time and space just for these models, so I'm going to have to see what I can do with block painting, dry brushing and washes.

A Good start indeed.
An Airbrush is just another tool.It just makes the application of paint quicker & easier.You can still mask ( whether tape or film & use a brush )

See these guides, check the brush ones not the airbrush ones.Do look around his site.
