"Since World War II, the US military has always expected to fight outnumbered. Soon, however, expendable unmanned systems may change that. For the first time in 70 years, America could have numbers on its side. That turns traditional assumptions about tactics, technology, and budgets upside down.

"It does flip things," said Lt. Gen. Robert Walsh, deputy Commandant of the Marine Corps. "We've been down the path of each system getting more expensive, more complicated, and therefore we're buying less of them….What we see is the opportunity with unmanned systems to provide more mass."…"

I'm all for it ! As I have said, as a PL or Co. Cdr I would have liked a couple of T-2s in each Squad … And was US ARMY … Not USMC … evil grin

Sounds nice. As a plt and Co cmder I never had a full T/O. Heck once I had a platoon of 20…..including the HQ element.

Yep, I've deployed with a 17 man Plt and later a 63 man Company.

Its very important to strike the right balance of course- its all very well outnumbering the enemy with Robots but you have to make sure that you and your enemy have sufficient strength to defeat the robots when they inevitably turn on you…

It sounds good until the thing gets stuck, sinks into a swamp or cannot make it up a steep incline. Do you abandon them and continue the mission?

I still like the idea but I hope they thoroughly field test these things under all kinds of conditions and know their limitations.

I also hope they make them cheap enough that commanders won't be afraid to use and expend them.
