As it says, which is the best that can 'sit' over Hills or form ridges, rather than the hills having to sit on the mat. UK if possible, as postage is way to much from overseas.

They're called "felt" or, for the even better sitting over hills, "painted (or dyed) sheets." Everything you do to make an even fancier mat--thicker paint, spill-proofing, thickness--makes it better for going under rather than over terrain.

My father used to tell me that life is full of choices. He was right about that.

Cigar Box mats are made of fleece, not felt. They work great with hills underneath. The fleece contours around hills without leaving creases, like felt does.

They do ship from the USA, but I don't know the postage. The mats are worth every penny. I've got 3 of them.

Fleece or painting canvas works the best. Look for fleece at your local craft or fabric store. Look for painting canvas at your local art supply store. You can order both online.

Fleece comes in a wide variety of colors but is limited in size. painting or artists canvas comes in a wide variety of sizes but you will probably want to paint it. Many TMPers have had great success with both materials.

I also found fleece to be best. It's stretchy so it tends to conform to hill shapes nicely (with some smoothing and manipulation).

I can't get felt to conform to the hills without creases, lumps, etc. It's just stiff.

I've never tried a bed sheet, but that seems like a good idea. They tend to be opaque, thin, light, and cheap.

I bought a Cigar Box mat via North Star. Very nice product, sits well over hills and North Star makes getting them easy for UK bods.

My cigar box mat sits over hills very well.

I find that Cigar Box mats and Deep Cut mats from Big Red Bat Cave both work well over hills.

The other option for fleece is to get it printed by Walmart (other similar places may have the same deal). John Emmons gave me this idea. You can get the images from wargames vault as a download. link
