I'm sure we've had this one before but it's probably been a while.

What "nerd" games do you play other than wargames?

A: "hex and counter" board war games.
B: Family board games.
C: Tabletop role playing games.
D: Live action role playing games.
E: Mobile/tablet games.
F: Computer games.
G: Console games.
H: Collectible/Living card games.
I: Whatever else I missed.

Feel free to elaborate in comments whether you play often or rarely.

Does shouting out Jeopardy "questions" count?

Never heard of "Living" card games. What are they?

14Bore23 Oct 2016 10:16 a.m. PST

I loved computer games mostly in the flying kind, but had a modern tank and WWII The Russian Front that I played through numerous times on both sides. Computer has been down for a year and some.

The Beast Rampant23 Oct 2016 11:17 a.m. PST

Lots of board games, with some console gaming. And Jeopardy! should count. grin

Never heard of "Living" card games. What are they?

It's a non-collectable card game that sells a a base game, that can be augmented by fixed-content expansions that are released periodically. Fantasy Flight has quite a stable of them:

APBA baseball since 1962. However, for many years, I have been a collector, rather than a "gamer," much like wargaming, I suppose.

Weasel23 Oct 2016 12:06 p.m. PST

As Beast says, Living card games is basically Fantasy Flights answer to collectible ones.

They still get regular expansions, but the cards in each expansion are fixed, so there's no rarity issues.

C) Not so much "play" as much as "continue to generate content for, in hopes of playing again some day."

H. We keep threatening to play Nagic: The Gathering, but I think the last time we played was three homes ago.

A but not very much these days. It has now turned into B that I play with my children.

None. In the end, there are only miniatures.

Ben Avery23 Oct 2016 5:12 p.m. PST

Plenty of A and B. Not so much computer games and both my tabletop and live action days are some years ago.

The type which currently occupies the majority of my time and attention is Megagames. Probably around 8 all day games per year, with a lot of time spent producing them and organising a group to put them on.

I play board war games including SF and Fantasy games but they are not all hex based. I actually prefer games with areas rather than hexes these days. Also play Star trek Ascendency which has areas connected by routes (not sure what to call that. Also play B & F.

Allen – yeah, I was trying to find a better term. I do like area-based games a lot better too.

Old school Kriegspiel.

Plus a bunch of the answers already given above.

Old Contemptibles24 Oct 2016 11:51 a.m. PST

The OP just about labeled all games as "nerd" games.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP24 Oct 2016 12:11 p.m. PST

A rarely and H very rarely. When you've got miniatures who could ask for anything more?

rmaker24 Oct 2016 5:53 p.m. PST

A, B, C, F.

Allen5724 Oct 2016 6:45 p.m. PST

Shagnasty, I find miniatures great for tactical games but do you play higher level games with miniatures? Never found a game that works well at the upper levels with miniatures though I do have a number of board games where miniatures substitute for counters.
