I'm looking to start my first foray into ww2 wargaming, and I've decided to go with 10mm company/battalion level and the Panzergrenadier rule set. 10mm as a compromise between model visibility/coolness and better looking battles, and PzG as a compromise between ease of play and realism. I'm not quite prepared to spend 35 euros + shipping for the hardcover, but I have seen two mentions of a "combat Edition" monochrome softcover. I haven't been able to find where to purchase this online. Help appreciated, along with any suggestions for an alternate rule set that would be beginner friendly and fit my criteria. |

You could try Ostfront, its a good compromise between ease of play and realism (or at least we think so!) and would suit 10mm well. The Quick-Fire rules are available for free download: link They give you the rules for infantry and vehicles, as well as basic army lists for US, Wehrmacht, Soviet and British forces. The main rules cover everything else, including the map campaign system: link |

With a tweak or two I quite like Flames of War. They have small paperback rule books that are inexpensive, and you can get them on Ebay very cheap. Down side is having to buy army books (though there are ways around that). Those too can often be had cheap on Ebay, flea markets, etc. Fistful of TOWs is an excellent rule set. Each stand is a platoon (it can also be played 1:1). A bit pricy at $50 USD BUT it covers every period from 1920 – 2020 and contains army lists and vehicle data for the entire period. It even includes a "unit builder" so you can design any vehicles they haven't covered. So with one rule set you get the whole she-bang. |

Thanks for the link! I did do a search of Cavalier Books but didn't come up with anything. Actually now that I see the price, I'm finding it hard not to just get the deluxe version… I'm somewhat put off by FoW being called the Warhammer of ww2 games. I already Play 40k, so I really want something more realistic. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm really just looking for something to try so I can get a feel for the scale. Ostfront looks great, especially since I can try for free. Will definitely give it a shot when my models come in. |

I find Flames of War is quite a good game if you tweak it ever so slightly. My mod is online for free. It breaks up the turn sequence and adds in an opportunity fire rule. Get it here: link |
